After trial and error of finding out how to fix “service trailer brake system” code, I found the suspension control module to be the problem. I swapped with one from a different truck and code and message cleared. However, I could not keep that one and ordered a replacement. It is a different model number and when installed the message will not go away like it did before. Do these need programmed or do I need to order exact model number replacement?

I don't know the answer to that, but I know GM pretty well. I'd bet that it needs to be programmed to work.

And yes, you'd better be 400% sure you have the right part number, or you'll be yanking your hair out.
