Shop Manuals and Such

Hey guys,

Which shop manuals are ideal to own. I have 94' Silverado and I would like to be able to do anything from disassemble motor parts to pull bed off ect. Which manuals are the best? Is there an "official GM manual" for these trucks?

Yep, a Helms manual is the manual to have for your truck. It has everything in it. They can be pretty pricey though.

A goo dalternative is a Haynes or Chiltons manual. Both are good for most things, but don't go into great detail like the Helms.

One thing I like about the Haynes over the Chiltons is the Haynes will usually tell you how to perform a step or procedure that usually requires a special tool. Both the Haynes and Chiltons are usually under $15.

The "official" factory shop manual is the only true source of knowledge. Like Mountaineer Tom said, they can be pricey, though their level of detail is unmatched.

I figure if they help you do ONE service procedure , they've paid for themselves.

Has anyone subscribed to alldata? I understand it's factory manual, parts lookup, plus TSB's.

I use All Data to check up on TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins). You can find them at:

You can also subscribe to an online edition of the official shop manual at:

You can also search for recalls and servicing tips. It doesn't replace the Helm manual but you can pay for a subscription to get detailed TSB's.

I prefer the real Helm (Either CD ROM or paper is a good choice) as you'll always have it in front of you.
