How to fix factory CD Player

Heres how I have fixed 2 of them. Our company trucks get a lot of dust (Road Construction) Had symptoms. ERR on display, eject CD, wont play even though you hear it trying to read disc. etc........ :sigh:

I take the radio out and take the top cover off. There is a hole on top about 1" in diameter. If you look towards the back (inside) of the cd player you will see the Laser eye. It runs on a worm gear (gear runs diagonal to CD player and is about 1/16th" in diam.).

I took some WD 40 on the straw that comes with it ( or whatever you can use to dab it on inside of the small space. Spray it into a cup or something so you can dab it on the gear) and carefully touched a couple of drops onto the worm gear and no more problems! ( I was very careful not to touch oil to anything else inside ) Fixed first one over a year ago and it and second one still work fine.:nono:

I would say that the grease on the worm gear is collecting dust and causing laser eye to bind. WD 40 thins it out. Dont have any pics because I'm a procrastinator who keeps waiting for the 5 Megapixel Cameras to drop in price.

i have heard also that the laser lense will get dirty and won't read correctly or cause errors.

Yeah, I cleaned it with a Q-Tip while I was in there.
