I've been disappointed that my Apple CarPlay does not work wirelessly in my 2021 Suburban.

If I plug in with a cable, it works.  Without the cable, I can't make it work (although phone calls work without a cable).

By all accounts, it looks like CarPlay should work wirelessly but doesn't.

Anyway, last week, I rented a 2021 Lincoln.  Apple CarPlay worked perfectly between that and my phone with no cables.

Any ideas?

When we first got our 2021 silverado we had the free wifi for 3 months with On-Star trail and the Carplay worked wirelessly, but once that trial period ended carplay stopped working wirelessly and we had to use the cord.  The reason I found was that the data transfer needed for carplay needed the wifi to work wirelessly.  But as of a couple of weeks ago the carplay just started connecting and running wirelessly again.  Not sure if Apple upgraded something in a recent update, but I'm not complaining now.  It will drain the phone battery.

Interesting.  So, I connected my phone to the car WiFi.  It warned something like "limited connectivity" because I don't have an account for the Suburban built-in phone.  However, wireless CarPlay worked!  And my phone still had Internet connectivity (presumably through my phone provider).

So, it works after all (if you know what to do).

Your phone needs to be connected to the cars myChevrolet WiFi in order for CarPlay to work. You don’t need data, and CarPlay won’t use any, but for whatever reason it needs that connection to work.

It will not allow me to connect to the vehicle wifi. Can anyone tell me how you made this work.

Good news!

I reset my system to "Factory defaults,"

I cleared the user data and

I cleared the default apps.

Now, my phone works wirelessly as expected!

I had to reprogram some things (radio stations, WiFi network, etc.) but that was not a big deal.

Make sure you check your carplay settings to ensure that wireless is enabled.  I can't say for certain Apple has this setting, but I know as a fact that the Android phones have a setting in which you can disable "wireless" Android Auto.

These settings at least for Android Auto are found deep within the phone's settings rather than any setting that can be found while using Android Auto itself.
