Hello, I have a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 that appears to have a defective ABS control module part number 19244881. The ABS and Brake lights come on the instrument panel while driving and will reset with restarting the vehicle. No codes, and no service engine lights. All electrical connections are good and cable harness ground is clean and tight. Does replacing the ABS control require "coding" by dealership or a service vendor that has ability, or can I just replace the module with no compatibility issues?

Been there. I had a 2002 Suburban with the same issue. There are several options:

 - Buy a junk yard unit and have it programmed at the dealer.

 - Take your control module apart and re-solder the broken connection (no programming required).

 - Buy a new unit and have it coded by the dealer.

 - Send the part to a repair shop, so that they can rebuild it (no programming required).

Personally I did not want to deal with programming, so I took mine apart and did the solder repair. After 2 weeks the problem came back. I opened the module and re-soldered again. It worked for a few days and the problem came back. Then I went on eBay and paid about $100 for a repair service. I shipped the part to them, then completely refurbished it, re-soldered, tested, and sent it back. It worked perfectly for years after than. In fact, it sill works properly to this day.

You can put plastic bags over the electrical connectors and drive the truck with the module removed.

Here is a link that takes you to several different repair options on eBay.

I hope this helps.

I'm in the same boat now with my 1999 Silverado.   Replacing my ABS module...   Is there software available to do this coding at home?  If anyone did it at the dealer, do you remember what they charged you?   Can an indy shop do it?
