Best fix for trottle response

What are the best ways to improve the throttle response of my 5.3L '02 Sierra? I am really used to mashing the gas pedal of my old '94 350 and going. The '02 seems to consider going for about a second and a half. I know this is the Vortech era, but still...

 

Anyone have advise on:

 

programmers

throttle body spacers

throttle body modifications

mass airflow sensors

intake kits

etc.

 

Or am I just crazy and really miss my 350?

I own a 2000 Chevy Silverado and a few of my buddies have GMC Sierra's and we all had the same problem that you are talking about..........and we all had our throttle bodies replaced, it costed us nothing to have them replaced as they were still under warranty..........my advice is take it to your dealer and have them replace it........had no problem since then! Hope this helps.

It's not really a problem, just an annoyance. I wouldn't think a new throttle body would fix it.

 

Has anyone modified (ported) their throttle body to reduce the step the incoming air must over come?

 

I know guys with '99 and up GM trucks that "just get used to it", so I think it is all the new generation motors. However, I want instant passing power. Direct down shifting, etc. I was hoping there was a simple after market fix, rather than the dragster junkies on another forum that immediately said "change gears, cam swap..."

I thought I had the same problem as you before I got the throttle body replaced, when I went to accelerate I didn't have a quick response but ever since I had the throttle body replaced it's nice and smooth and no hesitation at all. If your truck has a "drive by wire" cable-less throttle then the delay is programmed in by GM to eliminate your foot bouncing on the pedal when you go over bumps. Every year they added a little more delay. 2001 minimal, 2002 noticeable, 2003 annoying and 2004 very annoying. The dealer can't fix it cause it ain't broke, but a custom programmer like Wester's can. He completely eliminated the delay in my 2002, along with a 50HP gain, much better throttle response and low end torque and nice firm shifts from the tranny!

The trottle body is not your probelm, you have an 02 so you still have the cable type. You need a custom computer tune to rid yorself of torque management. It pulls timing when you mash the gas to prevent shocking the transmission. Basically, it's GM's band aid fix for a weak tranmission.

 

A Westers PCM, a Predator tuner, or if you are a daring do it yourselfer LS1Edit will take care of this nicely and is the ultimate tuning tool for your truck. But you will also need a laptop and scanning software like AutoTap or EFILive.

 

Another way to improve throttle response is to replace your clutch fan with a set of electric fans.
