Could someone please tell me why there is a large vs. small transmission hump in the floor pans in these models. Does the large hump indicate 4wd vs 2wd?

I thought trucks that 4x4s and or floor shift trucks have the high hump and 2wd automatics are low hump.

My 68’ GMC 2wd with a Th400 has the large removable hump….so that blows that 2wd auto theory.

It is safe to say that all 4x4’s and stick shift trucks had large humps but there are 2wd’s with automatics and large humps roaming around as well….maybe only 2wd’s with Th400’s had large humps???

I do know for sure that the trucks with large humps had a removable “turtle shell” with about a dozen or more bolts holding it on while the low humps where actually molded to the floor and not removable.

This is strange phenomenon that we will probably never learn the real answer to but it is not only on 67-72’s but in 73-78’s as well.
