I assume you are referring to the Trailer Hitch Cap P/N 19421060 sold by the GM parts department which is manufactured by Curt.  I just got done installing one on my 2022 Sierra 1500 Limited with the Multipro tailgate.  It works good.  It is a spring loaded cover for the 2" receiver that is hinged at the top and has a snap latch to hold it down on the bottom edge.  Whenever the cover is up, the circuit to release the upper section of the tailgate is interrupted, preventing it from crashing into the trailer hitch.  The sensor appears to be a magnet and a reed switch.

The entire harness is plug and play.  My only complaint is that the kit did not provide any provisions to anchor the extra connectors.  I did not want them flipping around endlessly leading to fractured wires, so I made small brackets and used cable ties.

I would like to know how far the cover extends past the receiver ……. I have minimal clearance in my garage!

I have had one on my truck since 2020 and it works great. No issues what so ever.

I'm guessing 1/2" max.  The main part clamps onto the body of the receiver, the hinged cover is thin.

Had one on mine for 1.5 yrs and it works aok now.  I did not install it, local Curt/RV dealer did and I had problems after a few months.  There is a small magnet in the cover the completes a circuit when cover is closed so you can use the inner gate. It fell out and when the dealer contacted them, they were aware of that occurring and sent him a new one which he installed for $0.  Apparently the far east maker did not put any adhesive on some of them?  It had a 1 yr warranty when installed by a dealer.
