Put 285's on

:thumbs: Put Bridgestone Dueler At revos on my 2001 Silverado. They look awesome and are by far the best tires I've ever owned(great in the rain and snow, no more skidding). Noticed a little rubbing on the front drivers side when turning. So I read about leveling the front end and decided to tighten the torsion bars up. Was able to level the truck without using ford keys only took 15 minutes and some minor adjusting. Took the truck in today and had the front end aligned. Truck handles better in my opinion and the ride is not harsh at all. I raised the front about 1 3/4". The truck looks great. I even like the difference in visibility out of the reaview mirror. I also added a pro cold exhaust. Noticed a big difference from stock. I like it better than the K&N on my wifes old suburban. No drone under load. I also took my stock intake pipe and cut off the extra side junk, then wrapped the holes in rubber from and innertube and covered the whole thing in duct tape too make a straight pipe. The truck sounded better after this mod. After 57,000 miles I decided to change the front and read differential fluid. I used amsoil 75-90 for both front and rear. The rear oil looked ok, but the front drain bold was covered with black sludge. Am glad I changed it. I also use amsoil motor oil. I really like this site, its given me a lot of tips and reviews. Keep on truckin!!!

Interesting because I just had 285/75/16 BFG AT TA KO's installed today on my stock rims (16x7) on my 03 silverado and have had NO rubbing at all on anything even with the wheel a full turn left or right. I didn't crank the t-bars at all...I like the look with and w/o them cranked so I chose not to crank them. Congrats on the new tires! The Bridgestones were my second choice, but I just like the BFG's a little better since I've always been partial to BFG tires. Congrats though!! :thumbs:

I like BFG's too but I liked the tread pattern on the revo's. I looked where the tire was rubbing and noticed that the brake line was pushing in on the wheel well lining just enough to cause it to rub. Also the bolts on the torsion bar were out quit a ways I could have raised the front over 2" if I wanted to. I called the dealer and they said the front is lower so that when you haul heavy loads the rear looks level with the front ( no sagging). I don't haul that much so not an issue with me.

I've heard that cranking them anything over an inch is VERY hard on your balljoints and other front end components. They wear out much quicker from what I understand. This past weekened I put 4 new balljoints in my '97 and can tell you that I really never want to do that again.

I'm lookin at the Revo's too. I've always bought the BFGs but the Revo's look really sharp and are getting a good rep for excellent traction without all the noise of BFGS.

 

Talking to the shop, the max they recommend is 265/75 on my standard 16x6.5 rims. They say 285s will require a 2-3" lift which I find hard to beleive.

 

Eventually I plan to install 16x7 or 8 wheels but I need to get rid of the junk 245 rubber that's on there ASAP.

 

Anyone do 285s on standard rims with a 1996 2500 suburban?

I've seen several Subs with 285 on stock rims with no lift. My Dad has a 95 K2500 and a 97 Z71, both with 285's and no rubbing. I myself had 33x12.50's on a 10" wide rim with only a torsion bar turned up at first and had no problems on my 97. Alot of the NBS trucks 2500's have 285's on them. Chris

My 285 BFG's are on my stock 16x7 rims and there are no problems at all...no cranking of the t-bars or anything...16x6.5 may not work...from what i've read the smallest rim 285's are recommended on are 16x7

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.

    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
