I just bought a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 and am using it to tow our RV travel trailer.  I would like to add a rear view camera on the back of my trailer that will project on the infotainment screen.   With my previous truck I was using a Furrion aftermarket camera on the RV, but that requires its own monitor which isn't that good.    My local GM dealer indicates the rear camera from GM is on backorder and it is also limited by its 35 foot cable.   My trailer is about 29 feet and I think 35 will not be quite enough.   A few questions:  1) is an extension cable available / possible if I buy the GM camera,  2) are there off brand cameras available that may have a longer cable?

thank you.

So I have this camera system for my enclosed 24' car trailer, I have a 21 Elevation. Minimal install, unit goes under the glove box, camera extension antenna goes down the passenger side door floor and antenna mounted on inside of back window. Then camera mounted to back of trailer, and I have about 32ft of cable running to the camera antenna mounted on the front of the trailer. Works great vision wise. It's a little clunky pulling up the camera on the stereo display.... You push the disconnect call on the wheel twice in a row to pop the camera up on the display and then twice again to go back to the radio/android auto/car play screens or you can push the home button to get off the camera view. But when you push the phone disconnect button it mutes the stereo, and sometimes you have to push it a 3rd time if you don't do it quite right timing wise. But it's still way better than having an external screen somewhere on your dash.

I have the wired GM camera purchased at same time with my 2020 Silverado 1500. Don't recall the cable length, but I have a few feet coiled up with camera attached on back of a 31' total length travel trailer. Camera has a fisheye view and works great using the Camera App. But, the trailer camera icon inside the Trailering App does not function; says camera not connected when icon is touched - dealership says Chevy does not have a fix for this issue.

Thank you both for the replies....  kmeleon is referring to the wireless camera, which may be my backup plan if the wired version does not work out.  I prefer wired version as there is a connection port near the 7 way connector near the rear bumper.

The GMC dealer parts department told me the cable length is 35 feet, however, they were going from their own personal purchase of a camera a few years back.   I posted same question on an RV forum site, and one person reported the cable length is 60 feet which sounds more like what you have EddDe...  My TT is 30 ft total, so if it works for yours it should work for mine.  Is your camera at bumper height on the back of your TT or roof height?  It makes a big difference in required cable length and how you route.

My truck is the new 2022 and not the limited 2022, so it has completely new user interface, and 18 inch screen etc.  I am hoping the new software fixes the clunky issues you both describe.   So far with the existing truck cameras the software is very good in my opinion.

thanks again.

hi there.  just bought a 2016 gmc 3500 diesel with 8 ft arctic fox camper mounted from the estate of my best friend who passed last year.  he had a gm installed rear camera mounted on the campers licence plate holder which was monitored from the dash factory rear camera display and worked great.  i removed the camper for winter and disconnected the lead and tucked it under the truck bumper where i found a ton of excess cable was already coiled.  for what its worth the set up with the licence plate holder was fantastic.  don't know where you're thinking of mounting the camera but if gm's length will work for you its a great setup.

with the camper's camera removed now my truck tailgate camera isnt working.  technology is wonderful.
