Leaking seal

'99 Z-71 Silverado leaking seal - I have seen one other article that I believe addresses replacing the seal on the back side of the transfer case. But I'm wondering about the step by step procedure for changing this seal. Is the something that should be attempted at home with basic tools? The dealer quoted $130+.

It is on the input shaft and next to the engine oil filter on a '99 Z-71 w/4.8L engine. I have attempted to attach a photo below.

Thanks for any info

the problem with doing this job at home is if you don't get the pinion nut back on properly it can cause serious front diff problems

and sometimes the exhaust makes it hard to get the seal out.

if you are going to do it yourself index everything. driveshaft, yoke, even the nut

and make sure everything goes back together exactly how it came apart

vibrations are a pain to fix.

Ditto.

Servicing a pinion bearing seal on either the front or rear axle at the very least requries monkeying around with crush collars and the like. Get this wrong and backlash can shift.

Not only will you have short pinion bearing life, but with backlash out of whack the R&P will go quickly. Then the vibration problem from not indexing your driveshaft/yoke are the LEAST of your problems.

I had some fluid sitting around it for a while, then finally I noticed a drop on the garage floor. It went to the dealer and was squared away via the extended warranty.

Thanks guys, It sounds like I would be better off taking it to someone who had done this job before. This could be an expensive learning process not to mention the headaches of trying to repair future problems.
