What are the advantages and disadvantages of a 383 stroker? I have '92 sierra with a 350 and was contemplating the idea of getting a stroker kit. Does anyone have any input whether this would be benificial or a waste of money?

Unless you have alot of experience building engines then it can get to be a hassle. Sure it is beneficial, the amount of mods that are available for the SBC Chevy are limitless, but in most states you are going to have to keep it smog legal.

To get the full benefits of the gained stroke there will definitely be some work that will need to be done to the heads, or go with a set of Vortec heads. But then you need a different intake and there are issues with that and the TBI. You would also need to reprogram the PCM and you would want to find a different cam as well.

If I remember correctly there is some machining that has to be done on the bottom side of the cylinders. By the time it is all said and done you can sink alot of money into a project like this.

Your best bet would be to go with a crate type engine. Personally I would recommend the 383 Stroker engine that is built by Smeding Performance. It is built specifically for these trucks, and uses your stock TBI unit and computer. It produces 310 HP and somewhere in the neighborhood of 350-400 lb ft of torque. For $3,995 its a pretty good deal and is a direct drop in replacement. No hassles whatsoever.

Check them out at http://www.smedingperformance.com

The direct link to the engine I mentioned is: http://www.smedingperformance.com/engine_p...ruck_engine.htm

If and when my truck ever needs an engine this is what will probably go into it...provided my pockets are deep enough. A new GM longblock or reman Jasper go for about $1600.

Hope this helps.
