My father-in-law bought a new to him 2013 Silverado LT - 150K on the dial.   It has aftermarket tires and rims.  we have a few questions.

1.  display says "service tire monitoring system" when we cycle the display it shows "--" for all 4 tires.  I cannot find the TPMS relearn on the display, i cycle through the vehicle info and there is no option for a reprogram.  Does this mean that these tires do not have a TPMS installed?  I looked at the valve stems and it appears they are TPMS because the valve stem has a concave portion indicative, they are TPMS.  how can I tell for sure?  If he doesn't have TPMS on the tires, is there a way to turn off the low tire icon on the dash?

2. Service Air Bag light - the connections under the passenger seat are fine and intact.  do you think one or both of the impact sensors upfront need replacing?  is there a way to trouble shoot them?

3.  it came with no key fob.  I have a spare key fob for my 2011 - is there a way to make my spare work for his 2013?

appreciate any help

1 and 3 - TPMS relearn is activated via a programmed key fob to the truck, or with a bi-directional scanner.  You'd need a bi-directional to program that spare key fob you have as well.

2 - Get a good code reader that can read airbag.  Here's a link to one - BlueDriver  Airbag system sets codes which can indicate the possible point of failure.  Could be a front impact sensor, could be a side impact sensor, could be a faulty SDM, but won't know without the codes.

Sorry yes I forgot all about the DIC method.  Used to it being in the newer trucks I forgot it was in the older ones too.

So if you press the info button on the DIC panel, you don't see a tire relearn function at all is what you are saying?

The airdown method won't work after 2010 also if I recall correctly so you will need a relearn tool as well.  Google EL-50448, there are plenty of affordable ones to choose from.

there is no tire relearn under any menus.  Is this because there are no TPMS sensors installed?  I have the relearn tool as well.

thanks

When I bought my 06 Avalanche it had 20" wheel;s and those 16" wide tires on it, a 4 X 4 with low profile tires on it so wide you could hardly drive it on the rutted I 5 freeway! Well I got rid of those; there were no tire pressure sensors in them so when I found my wheels I bought 4 sensors and programmed them using the owner's manual.

so, to get an answer - if there are NO TPMS sensors in the tires - what happens on the DLC?  or should i just go to a tire shop and ask them?

You should still see the display to relearn if it has the full button DIC.

this 2013 silverado has the full DIC as pictured below.  however there is no "RELEARN" option - why?

when we cycle we can see this but instead of 60 and 59 all we see is "--"  for front and rear

also - his valve stems like like below - the chamfered area according to my research indicates TPMS (circled area below)

Alright.  We have an LT and LTZ in for service.  The LTZ has the ability in the DIC to initate the relearn.

The LT does not have it.   Appears to have been a trim specific feature on these year trucks.

So.  You will need a programmed key fob or a scan tool to initate a relearn.

Get a Tech-2, it can handle all of this and more, will pay for itself soon enough.
