Pressing the barfing man (hands free button on the steering wheel) brings up a connect service required message. This happens while our phones are connected via Android Auto (phones have unlimited data plans) while actively streaming audio and Waze so obviously the data is working. Is the hands free button connected to the OnStar service in some way that prevents its use once the trial expires even though you have an active data connection currently connected to the infotainment system?

does this happen all the time?  I've had my hands free buttons stop responding before but usually they're fine after a restart.

What happens if you press and hold that button with AA running?  It should bring up the assistant, I'd think.  I think a quick press rather than a long press triggers the native (not AA) voice commands, which probably require you to pay money because GM is annoying.

I haven't tried a long press, I'll give that a shot. Quick press and voice commands worked fine for a while but I cant recall if it stopped prior to the trial subscription ending or when I switched phones (I'm leaning toward the subscription ending). I'll give the long press a shot and see what it does. Thanks for the idea.

Just wanted to say thanks; the long press did the trick!

I just bought my 2024 Silverado in November '24 after numerous GMC's and like the others have said, right after trial offer, my hands free will not work.  I have models 2015 to 2021 GMC Siera's and they all worked on the handsfree without any plan.  I am very frustrated and disappointed as well

The post right above you reveals the “secret” for  hands free ops without a plan. This works for droid phones but I can’t speak for Apple products. I’ll guess it works for them also. Going out on a limb here in assuming you have paired your phone to your truck.
