Hey all, been looking at 18, 19, and 20+ 2500hd Diesel Crew Cabs.  5k-10k price difference between 18 to 20.

Wondering, those that have had both if there is that much Difference between the 18 & 19 with 6 speed transmission vs 20+ with 10 speed transmission?

Thank You-

Went from a 2011 6 speed to a 2020 10'er. Only problem I had was the TCU fried on the 2011.

The 10'er does get better mileage, when I keep my foot out of it. Some have said on other boards that the 10 isn't as beefy as the 6 but if you let it do what it does I'll bet it will handle most anything

have a ton of seat time in a 21 6.6 gas 6 spd and 500 mile son my 6.6 gas 10spd. Honestly? Difference isnt much. Keeps it in the power band a little better...thats about it. Both are awesome. Very similar mpg so far.

Thank You both for your comments, was thinking the 6 speed would work, but if a 10 speed was a huge difference I would be better off.

The old 6 speed ALLISON, the actual Allison 1000 were and still are pretty stout transmissions.  The GM "Allison" 10L1000 has been mostly good, but kinda hard to beat the reputation the 1000 had all those years.

Of the 10L1000s we've seen for work (only a few) its been leaks and valve bodies.  The old Allison 1000?  In going on 15 years at work, one was replaced with a new unit, 2 or 3 others came out for some minor/moderate repairs.  But we've worked on more of the 10L than the old 1000.

As far as the truck they are both in, if you are shopping 17-19, I'd eyeball a 1 ton if you need the most possible payload.  A diesel 2500HD gets a bit snug, especially the higher up the trim level you go (2200-2600lbs payload crew cab).  A 1 ton SRW crew gets near or just over 3000lbs with the diesel.  As far as 2020-current, the 2500HD payloads out at or above what the old SRW 1 tons did (2800-3200lbs range for 2020+).

I have no experience with the Allison 6 speed, but coming from Ram which is still a 6 speed trans(both the 68RFE and AISIN), there was a MPG difference going to a 10 speed transmission. Did not matter what I towed with the Ram, 9-10MPG was the normal.  The F350 got 2MPG better towing, I can only assume the GM will be similar.  Also, towing with cruise control was very smooth with the 10 speeds trans, the Ram could do it just at much higher RPMS at times on grade changes.  A ten speed trans doesnt seem to work as hard.

I got to use a F350 with a 10 speed and loved it, hated the interior and some other things on the Ford so I kept the Ram.

Traded my Ram as soon GM did the refresh.

Thank You newdude and sstoner, the 10 speed sounds like better mpg, but the 6 speed from many say it is very reliable.

I guess the right deal would be my decision.
