When my left tailgate cable broke with my four wheeler on it, it bent the hinge on the right side. After that it was very hard to close the tailgate. So I automatically figured the dealer would be higher than finding the parts I needed at a junk yard. WRONG! I found one after searching a few different places- even the same color as mine. They wanted $20 for just the part that bolts to the fender and $20 for the one that bolts to the tailgate! I asked if they were crazy! I figured I would check the stealer "just in case" because I thought I could get them for probably $5 each at the junk yard. So at the dealer, imagine my surprise when they said $7.15 (#15756846) and $11.19 (15074252) All I have to do now is paint 'em!

You will find that most salvage yards make you paya premium when you want 1 or 2 small pieces. It is rare that you get anything out of there for less than $20, now if you had bought a large item at the same time you probably could have got those at no cost. They are more or less charging you a minimum no matter what the part.

I have run into this numerous times. It's always a good idea to check the price on new parts vs the junkyard. I think the junk guys try to drill you for their labor and most places wont let you pull your own. We have a yard here in town that you pay a buck to walk the yard and pull your own.

You have to know what the part is worth. 1st time I blew a CV I figured it would be a fortune so called up a couple wreakers, price ranged (cnd) from 150 to 200 each. Called up the local drive line shop new was $150 after core.

Always check the parts/house or dealer first. Then you know whether the junk yard is low or high price. And, that's right... the yard always tried to cover any labor they have on the part... so it pays to know the "new" cost...

We don't have any "junk yards" here anymore. They are now calling themselves "automotive parts recyclers". I remember when they would let you roam around the junk yard to find and dissassemble the part you needed. Now the few we have left are like new parts stores, you stand at a counter and they check the computer inventory. Might be more efficient, but the thrill of the hunt is gone!
