Hey guys - I did some searching around the forum - found some answers - but if I am asking some of the same questions again sorry.

 

I want to replace the crappy factory speakers in my Reg Cab 02 HD - the front doors and the rear pillars - according to crutchfield direct fit speakers are 6 3/4 in door and 4x6 in pillars. I was thinking about Kenwood eXcelon x468c - 4x6 and x178 - 6 3/4 for doors.

 

Has anybody used these speakers before - or heard them in use ??

 

Also - my truck has a small 'tweeters' above the other speaker in the door. If I replace the other speaker - do I disconnect this tweeter ??? or do I leave it hooked up ??

 

Oh - yeah...will be running speakers off the factory cd head unit....I have NO desire to change it out.

It really doesn't matter what brand you replace the factory speakers with, they will sound a LOT better. But keep in mind that by adding just mids and tweets, you will lose a bit of bass from the factory speakers. But everything else will be 10 times better, so it's a trade-off.

 

As for the tweeter...Ideally, you would want to buy components, or "seperates" as a replacement. These will come with a new tweeter to replace the existing ones (seperate from the mid-driver). But if you don't want to go to the extra time and (minimal) expense, make sure that you get two way speakers to go in the doors. These have a small dome tweeter built into the speaker that you install. The Kenwoods that you named are two ways, so you should be OK.

 

Personally, I would go with components.

 

Infinity makes some decent ones for $30 more.

 

Fosgate has some components for the same price as the Kenwoods you mentioned.

 

It's up to you, components will be just a bit harder to install. Because you have to wire in the seperate tweeter, and find a place for the crossover box (I mounted mine inside the doors, down a the bottom). But they sound a bit better for the money, in my opinion. Two ways (the Kenwoods you listed) will go in easier, and sound almost as good.

Oh...By the way....The head unit is really easy to swap out in these trucks. :P

Thanks for the reply ...wingnut. I have used components in the past and they are a truer sound....but with the stock radio without an amp - will the sound be that much better ??

 

I used to be into crazy systems with 12in subs etc....but now 'as I am getting older' - Im just looking for speakers that will not make James Hetfield sound like he has marbles in his mouth when I turn the volume up over a 1/4 of the way.

 

Do you know how that stock 'tweeter' is wired ?? - Is it just run off the wire for the other speaker - or does it have its own wiring from the radio ?? I guess the real question is ... is it a real tweeter with built in crossover etc ???

As for the stock radio...its not about being hard...its just that I like the stock look and dont have to worry about some punk smashing my window while I am work to steal my aftermarket radio that he is going to sell or trade for a dime bag.

No, they won't sound all that much better. I was just looking at the price, you will get a little better, for around the same price. It's all subjective to taste anyway. Go with your wants/desires. :P

I seem to recall it is wired off of the other speaker....Definately not directly from the stereo. I believe that the "crossover" (probably more of a capacitor/bass block) is built into the stock speaker.

 

If you go with components, you will run the speaker wire from the head unit to the crossover, and a seperate sets of wires to the mid speaker, and the tweeter.

I hear you there...I kept the stocker in mine too....And it's faaaaar from stock sound.

You sold me....going to order the componets for the doors....what do you recomend for the 4x6 in the rear pillars....I dont see an infinity 4x6 speaker ??

 

Just want to make sure the stock radio has enough power to run the infinity componetes and new 4x6 in the pillars ??

I'm not brand loyal, so I would say that anything within your price range will sound better than stock.

 

I have Boston Acoustics 4x6 in the 92, and they sound good. Not sure if Crutchfield sells them though.

Yep - I will double side tape them in the door or velcro.

As for this....Cruthcfield sends you the extra wiring conectors and mounting brackets for free....Do Bestbuy/circuit city have these ??

Most component speaker sets that I have seen come with all the hardware needed. Didn't matter where they were bought.

 

Not sure about Best Buy or Circuit City, I don't buy many things from them other than DVDs, and CDs. I tend to support the local shops....Mainly because they tend to know about the products they sell. You know, things like whether or not the brackets are in the box. :D

Nut...checked with all the 'local' shops - none of them had components in stock...so I ordered the Infinity 6000cs components for the doors and Polk 4x6's for the rear pillars from crutchfield.

 

$209 for the whole set up - free shipping and 20 dollar coupon.

 

I know crutchfield is higher in price...but they have the stuff and I know I will get what I ordered.

 

Once I get them .. if I have a problem with the install - I will give you a shout.

Hey Nut - Put the speakers in yesterday.....not as easy as first thought. On the door with the Infinitys - For the tweeter - I had to create my own mounting bracket - made it out of a new truck splash gaurd. The 6 1/2 woofers didnt fit the fatory mounting base....had to drill new holes in the bracket to make it work. Then what I thought would be a 20 min job - the 4x6's for the rear pillar didnt fit right in the opeining - they were a tad too big to fit flush in the factory hole. Had to make rubber spacers to space the speakers out 1/8 of an inch. But other then that - They sound great. Now I can hear the full range of music ....instead of the muffled sound of the stock speakers.

 

If anyone is looking to upgrade their speakers for their Reg Cab silverado...dont buy the polk GXR46 4x6's. They sound great...but dont fit exactly right....I am sure there are other 4x6 speakers out there that wont need spacers to make them fit.

 

As for the Infinity 6000cs - componant speakers - They sound great - If you have the patience and the resources to make your own stuff these speakers are great. If you are looking for direct drop in speakers....these are NOT them. Just buy a regular 2 way or 3 way speaker and disconect the factory tweeter...and drop them in the stock hole with no modification whatsoever.

 

These are all powered by the factory radio.

Cool! Glad you like it. :)

 

I don't seem to recall having any of those problems when putting my components in, other than having to mount the tweets. As for the 4x6s not fitting, I'm not sure that I have ever heard of a set of those not going in right. :thumbs: That's just weird.

 

But the end result is well worth the effort, I'm sure :)

When you reference installing the crossover low in the door, exactly what do you mean? I know what one is but have never installed one - do you create some sort of mounting bracket to hold it in place in the door, otherwise it would rattle?

 

I was thinking about the Infinity Kappas, they seem to have a good rep, but I'm not 100% sure. I do want to go with components though.

 

Thanks for any tips on crossover install. Oh yeah, I have a 2001 Ext Cab.

      Thanks!  I figured as such; GM and other manufacturers have used standard parts and harnesses across trim levels and such for decades.  I pulled the blank accessory cover off of my commuter van (a 2016 or so Chevy 15-passenger) years ago and found the plug for a USB outlet.  It wasn't connected to anything, though (I tried swapping in an outlet from another van).  I was a GM Tech years ago (late-90s) and was pretty familiar with my 2006.  I might be wrong, but I view newer vehicles (pretty much anything made in the past 20 years) as being a lot more plug and play.  Meaning, more unused wires and plugs unless you have the Mack Daddy of vehicles.

      not all plugs will be used.  gm uses more generic harnesses that support most/all options, and if your truck doesn't have a specfiic option, the plug won't be used (commonly will have a dummy insert in the plug , or it'll be taped up, but some may just be left as is).  But it's sldo possible some p.o. has installed the wrong/cheaper parts that aren't correct for your vehicle...

      First off, I'm not trying to just get easy advice/fixes for the issues I've noticed so far.  I'll be combing through the site via searches and such, and if past experiences are any indication, should find what I need.  For the sake of conversation, though, I figured I'd post the handful of things I've noticed in the 12 hours since buying my 2010 SLE CCSB.     Indicator lights: Airbag and TPMS.  The tire pressures aren't reading for any of the wheels, so I'm pretty certain the sensors were either removed, are damaged, or are otherwise inoperable.  I used to mount and balance tires 25 years ago but am pretty much ignorant when it comes to TPMS.  My 2006 didn't have the sensors and this might be the fourth vehicle I've owned that does.     Radio: Rear speakers aren't working.  I removed the driver's side rear door panel and checked the speaker and wiring.  I also removed the sill and b-pillar covers to check the wiring.  A few minutes of Google Fu showed that this is potentially a head unit issue.    Switches: Power mirrors don't turn left/right.  I ordered replacement driver's door switches that should arrive tomorrow.  The windows and locks work but it was only about $20 for all of them.  The driver's side rear window switch lets the window down but won't put it back up.  I think the passenger rear doesn't work at all.  In the coming days/weeks, I'll break out my multimeter to check all of that.   Unknown wiring harness: There's a box attached to the front driver's side of the engine compartment, right where the second battery shelf is located.  There are three plugs, one of which looks like it fits a standard headlight-style bulb (9007 or similar).  It doesn't look like it's plugged into anything.  I'll do some digging and if I don't see anything elsewhere on the site, post some pictures here.   Unknown plugs on brake booster: There are at least two female plugs on the brake booster that aren't being used.  I think it might be a replacement/aftermarket, so maybe those are used for a different application, as there don't seem to be any unplugged harnesses and no indicator lights are on.   Little squeaks when turning: Sounds almost like a bushing around the bed of the truck.  I'll have to pay close attention as I get more familiar with the truck.   Clunk on acceleration: possibly the infamous drivetrain clunk.  My 2006 had it and I'm just not familiar enough with this truck yet to fully grasp what it is.   Anyway, my apologies for the vague and all over the place post.  This truck is new to me, and it's been four years since I drove my 2006.  With 200k miles, I know I'll need to learn this truck quickly to avoid having any major issues, despite being confident it's got much more life to it.  My 2006 had nearly 320k on it when I parked it (nearly 300k of which I put on the truck), and it was still drivable then, though I suspected the head gasket might have blown.  I'd hoped to have that truck back by now, but it's gone forever, as I detailed in my reintroduction thread.
