2010 silverado 3.42 rear diff swap to an 06 silverado 1500

Looking to see if I can put a 2010 silverado rear axle on my 2006. Both axles are 3.42 ratio and looks like everything should work for mounting.

All I know is, a cover for a 2007 fits a 1996 model, since I've done that.

 

Best thing to do is look up specs on a driveline parts site. There ARE definite internal differences between the two that I have long since forgotten. Externally, you'd have to measure everything.

 

Another possible pitfall is caliper piston size if it's rear disc to rear disc - different sized caliper pistons can require more (or less) pedal effort for the same braking action. You'd have to test them out and see which works better IF they're even interchangeable, or try searching the net for someone who has done that already. If the calipers bolt up, then it's a non-issue since swapping them out will be simple.

 

If both are drum brakes, then you'll have to make sure the line fitting is the same thread size / pitch and the same measurement (SAE or Metric).

 

Oh, and you'll need to make sure the wheel stud pattern and thread size works for your wheels.

2010 axle has a 1 inch wider track width.  2010 axle has different type of speed sensor.  May have different anchor block for parking brake cables.  Probably has 1355 pinion yoke so you might need conversion joint.

 

It's best to stick with same generation.

Update: 

The 2010 axle is mounted to my 06. To our surprise, everything fit perfectly. Had some concerns with the yoke and the shock mounts at first, but all fit nice. Thankfully, the brakeline on the 2010 was the same size as my 06 just different layout. The parking brake cables on the 2010 drums were unfortunately too long to use. However, my 06 parking brake cables were able to be transferred to the 2010 drums. The 2010 has a different layout for the shoes, so I'll have to get new shoes. Was a nice learning experience for myself and my future father in law. Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for the follow-up, too! I can't tell you how many times I've researched unorthodox swaps in forums, only to have a dead end with no follow up. This should help a few people down the road! Much appreciated, and glad it's done! 

 

Oh, and do yourself a favor and buy the Lisle spring tool for the fancy new shoe layout. I tried doing mine by hand back in 2008, bled EVERYWHERE, and swore so loudly that the neighbors wouldn't make eye contact with me for a month. I did manage to get it done, though. Took 6 hours!! With the tool, it's minutes.

Thanks, I will have to get one of those. I definitely wanted to share this experience to help others. Did alot of researching, but not much popped up for this specific year gap. 

 

Forgot to mention that we ended up using my 06 brakelines on the 2010 axle. The 2010 brake lines were the right size, but were set up with independent hookups for each drum. I am also going to note that an 06 drum cover fits a 2010 drum system, which is probably more common knowledge, but found it interesting. A lot of parts were interchangeable, which is nice. Already had it on the road and runs great.
