My understanding is the "Allison" 10 speed shares nothing with the 10 speed in the half tons, which was co-developed with Ford.

As for the original question, the 10 speed in the HDs shifts beautifully when it's working right.  Mine's been to the dealer a couple times to fix a hard shifting issue.  Hoping it's solved for good.

10L1000 stems from the GM/Ford joint venture origins.  Is it directly from the 10L60/80/90?  No as the 10L is larger than those by a good bit.

But.  Its definitely rubbing elbows with its joint venture brethren, the Ford 10R140.

GM definitely went their own way on the 10L vs. Ford on the 10R.  Best I can gather from some quick reading is the 10R140 has more design wise in common with the joint 10 speed, where the GM/Allison 10L has more GM doing their thing/Allison's validation and testing to get that name thrown on it.
