Clunk when put into gear

1. After changing the front and rear differential fluid a few days later I began to notice a clunk or metalic ping sound coming from the rear end when I put it into gear. This occurs occasionally and not all the time. Never noticed any leaks however I am going to recheck the fluid levels again.

2. Also, when starting from a stop light there is a slight delay followed by a clunk as if there is is something loose in the drive line. Any ideas on what to check for would be greatly appreciated.

I had that happen on my 98 (only I did not change fluid, it just started happeneing) followed by the dealer replacing the clutch and some other major items on the tranny. Mine was a 98 GMC Sierra, auto, v8. Sorry I can't be more help.

My 1989 C1500 did this for a few months until I finally had the problem diagnosed at a dealer. It was the front drive shaft yoke not being properly lubricated. I ended up taking it out and greasing it (when I also had to replace the rear seal on the transmission), only to have the clunking return. (I usually noticed mine when I stopped, or started from a redlight with about a 3 or 4 second delay) Eventually, after greasing it a few times, I bought a new front yoke that was nickel-plated if I remember correctly, fixed it right up. Good luck!

After rechecking the fluid levels, which were fine I believe it could be the front yoke as you indicated. Is this a repair which could be completed by a novice such as myself or would you suggest taking it in to be done? Do dealers etc. charge much to diagnose problems such as this? Thanks for your input.

Simply enough, do a search for "Driveline Clunk" and you will find enough information to read that would take you a nice chunk of a Martha Stewart prison term...

Anyway, the symptoms you described are causing by play in the slip yoke. This has been corrected several ways- lube it, change the t-case fluid to the newer GM blue juice, replace the slip yoke with a nickel plated one.
