GM scantool

Looking for someone who has access to a GM Scantool to do a Crankshaft position relearn on my 99 Suburban w/5.7 Vortec. I am in southern NH and would be willing to drive an hour or so in any direction to get this done. Lyndon at Westers is suggesting I do this to get the most out of his PCM retune for my truck. Even if you know of a dealer or service center that is open minded on this sort of thing would be most helpful.

As far as I know, that's the only thing that can change parameters in PCM's, BCM's, etc.

Since we are talking about the scan tool.....

Has anyone heard that Autozone has been sued for giving out the wrong codes? I went there last night with my girlfriends sisters car and they would not do it. Told me they have a lawsuit against them for giving out the wrong codes. Went to Checkers, same story as well about Autozone and now they don't do it either.

Funny thing is that Autozone will still rent you the scan tool with a hundred dollar deposit. I think the thing is about 100 to 150 new.

As to the post above, can't do it with the Actron. Need the Tech 2. Cost of a new one of those babies is close to $5000.

I figured it was only a matter of time before somebody tried to cash in on Autozone reading the codes. You can't do something nice for people without being punished for it.

Not to ask a stupid question but is the same tool needed if you wanted to add a factory XM radio to a truck that does not have one?

The answer is no. No scan tool should be needed. Installed XM in my truck and didn't have to do anything. Although I tied it to the existing factory radio head. But I still think the answer is no.

As far as the Autozone thing goes, I called them again about two days later because I was thinking about biting the bullet and buying the stupid scan tool and the guy told me why would I want to do that and I told him because the other night I was told they no longer could do it. He told me that now that they could, just can clear the codes.

?????

Don't know, maybe someone else knows more??

How did you add a factory XM setup to your truck w/o using something like Tech2? I thought that it required that to reprogram the radio?

Sorry I think I may have mislead you. I added the XM radio to the factory head unit via through the Delphi unit. Didn't add a factory XM unit. Still unaware of using the Tech 2 to program the radio unless you need to tell the BCM for some reason. Would have figured you could switch head units with out a problem.

The radio needs to be programmed because it uses the VIN to check with the BCM and confirm that it's installed in the correct vehicle. If the VINs don't match, radio don't work. It's for theft prevention - but I can't think of anyone who would want to steal a factory head unit. Now if it was an Alpine or Pioneer, then I could understand.

See that is what I was wondering, if a tech2 would be useful for adding something like a factory XM setup or a factory NAV setup in a vehicle that didn't have one...

It's always useful - lets you communicate with anything on the vehicle. Most scan tools cannot talk to the ABS or airbag modules because the standards allow the manufacturers to develop their own communication protocols. Of course, it's so cost prohibitive I can't imagine an individual owning one. Even on Ebay they go for $2000 up to $5000.

Well with more and more people adding things like NAV or XM radios, oversized tires, etc. A shop could maybe make that initial cost back relatively soon.

This is very true. Especially with GM charging something like $3900 for their new 20" wheels - since it requires a reprogram to account for the larger rims/tires. Their past issues of Techlink make very clear that the customer pays for the VCI number. Personally I'd love to own one, just for my personal use (and while I'm at it I'll take a really hot girl, big house and a job that pays 6 figures).

Keep thinking about AutoTap or the Actron scanner - don't know if I'll have the cash for it after current expenditures.
