parking/emergency brake

Sorry that I haven’t been around lately (3months).  Job responsibilities and marathon training have both increased…..and its either sleep or being online.  I’m still battling my parking brake problem.  I used to use my parking brake every time when I parked.  (My driveway slants down under my house.)  My parking brake went to the floor (or nearly so).  I began to notice that my parking brake wasn’t holding after I let off the service brake, and the truck would roll against my transmission pin.  I took it to the dealer and they didn’t notice any problems – except for brake dust build up.  I said this doesn’t sound right, a parking brake is to last the life of the vehicle….and there should only be dust if there was wear.  (I wasn’t bright enough at the time to ask whether they could tell if it was from the parking brake or the disk brakes).  How can my “parking” brake wear if it is stopped.  They mentioned that I probably didn’t release the brake.  Yeah! Right!  I think I’d notice how far my foot is on accelerator and how fast I’m not going.  They said that I didn’t even need to use the parking brake.  It was there for “additional” parked stopping if I was loaded with something or a trailer.  How am I to expect it to help when I have MORE load, than when I have NO load?  I wasn’t satisfied with the answers.

So here I am 3-4 months later, and I stumbled on a lead.  Can someone help explain to me how the self-adjust mechanism on the brake works and/or is “recalibrated.”  Also, I’d like to know more about the transmission parking “pawl”/pin.

Oh, btw when I first started noticing this, I think I had around 25,000-30,000 miles.

Thanks

the parking break is just your rear brakes on a cable.. So either your rear drums are out of adj, or you need to take in the slack of the cable

Is the truck "driving" when you brake?

Or you can start by looking under the truck and see how much slack is on the cable...

I wouldn't go back to that dealer. If you read your owners manual it tells you exactly how to set your parking break. 1) Step on the brakes 2) Set the parking brake 3) Then put the truck in park and do the opposite to release. This takes the pressure off of the pawl pin and prevents lockup. I usually set the e-brake, put the truck in neutral and let the truck "rest" on the e-brake, then shift to park. I always thought you just needed the rear brakes adjusted, or if the shoes / drums are warn, replaced?

Dont think so...

The fullsize truck have seperate drum shoes in the hub of the rear disc brakes on the 99+ fullsize trucks.

Thanks Blazer for your attempt.  :P  When I was at the dealer they showed me the "top hat" disc/drum brake.  I can't believe they have such a small separate parking brake.  I asked the service guy how I was suppose to have a backup braking system.  I think through my research I've found out that there are two seperate brake "lines/cylinders" (I don't think I'm using the correct terminology.)  The front right and back left are connected, and the front left and back right.  I also found out about the transmission parking pawl ratchets.  (I think I heard this was because someone had an "emergency" situation and slammed their transmission into park.  Well this tore the transmission apart and also sent the vehicle into a spin or something.)  Does anyone have a new bodystyle truck that they are planning to get rid of?  :P

Anyway.....has anyone heard of backing up at walking pace and applying the parking brake?  I've heard on some GM vehicles this is done to re-adjust the brakes. (source follows)

Has anyone heard of this?

The dealers/GM is full of #### when it comes to the parking brake.

My brake only barely works in reverse!

When i took it in they told me the same thing.  They said it held, i said "not when i park at home it doesnt"

Its suppose to hold if your in gear and mine hasnt since about 30k!!

I have adjusted it once and i think its due for another.

Just remove the rear caliper/drum and adjust it yourself.

I think ill do mine again tomorrow.  If it doesnt work, ima have to order some new pads and get the damn thing rotated.  I think it might be glazed

    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had manager to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
    • PS: Here's pic of the 2014 wheels I'd like to run when it's not winter. Stuck my finger around new wheel caliper setup. Very little clearance. I suspect these won't fit, but won't know for sure till I try.   Edit: And my first mod. Stubby antenna from the old truck.
