TAIL GATE CABLE RECALL

Recommended Posts

I thought I read here someone actually got new cables thru the recall. I called my dealer and he says they know nothing. He says the public always hears about these things before they do. I asked if GM would send letters out and he said yeah. Anyone get a letter yet?

Got the first letter in the mail yesterday, stating new cables would not be available until summer. Then, another letter will follow, stating I should make the appointment at the dealer.

Haven't got my letter yet, but I did read it on the GM site. Don't know the link, sorry, but it was in the april or late march gmnews stuff.

Basically said don't load anything or sit on your tailgate till you get the cables replaced! I seem to remember the time frame is late summer 2004 to start the change-out. This will cover 2000-2004 MY silvys and sierras. It also said a formal letter will go out when the process is about to start.

Snoop around the GM site and I am sure you will come up with the letter.

Why only 2000-'04 MY Silverado's? I know at least 5 or 6 people with 99's that have either had both cables break or at least one on them break. I was sitting on my Brother in laws when his broke, luckily only 1 broke and not both. Many '99 owner's are going to be ticked!! Chris

Does anyone know what the part #s are, for the new replacement cables?

88892973 & 88892972 are the numbers for the 2nd design that came out in 2002 sometime. These are 'sealed' on one end only (and not that well). I put them on my GMC and they are rusting inside out as well.

I would buy these ($19/pair at your dealer) and use silicone to seal the ends yourself. Save your receipt and GM should rehimburse you for them once the recall gets underway and the newest design are available.

But remember as the letter states do not seat onthe tail gate. If you are load things into the box make sure you remove the tail gate.

I can see on TV , Ford showning people sitting on the tail gate and say it is safe to do it but not try it with a GM lol

So does this mean we aren't supposed to use our "trucks" until late summer? Then I shouldn't have to make my payments for the next couple of months either, since I am now driving a car. What a joke, C'mon GM pull your heads out.

I think there is a newer 2004 design that is stainless steel not galvanized.

Why isn't the 1999 model part of the recall? Did the 99 use a different cable??

They are I believe. Remember 1999 had old body style and new body style trucks that year
