strange noise

i just started hearing a high pitch screeching sound, almost sounds like a brake pads rubbing, but it's not. It's hard to locate, but it sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine, behind the drivers side front wheel well. Anyone have any ideas?

OK, let's start with when does it happen?

Does it get worse when you turn the wheel?

Could be belt slipping, or power steering pump.

It's hard to tell without more details.

I think that was my cat...

When do you hear the screech? Truck cold or hot, when u hit the gas, braking?? One thing to try is go thru a quiet overpass with the windows open, that may help, or have a buddy stand by as you drive past.

it just started last night after I filled my tank, I pulled out of the gas station kinda hard while making a right turn.

It sounds like scraping brake pads, but it happens when the car is rolling and when it's at idle and get's louder when I rev it in Neutral. The sound is NOT anywhere from the top of the engine, I can hear it best in the cabin and sqatting next to the drivers side tire. Fluids are ok. I have a Radix installed, do you think it's the belt? It doesn't sound like belt slippage. I only have 16K miles on it.

The sound was loud when I started the engine this morning but faded until you can barely notice it, after 10 minutes of driving.

Thanks for your help

I'm experiencing the same noise in my '03 Denali with 10,000 miles. You're right in that it sounds like scraping brake pads (but we know it's not). The noise is also similar to a vacuum/air leak. I noticed the noise the day after I had the truck serviced (oil change, etc.). There was another post here on April 1st from "Machine" who has an Escalade that was making the same noise. I emailed him and he said his noise mysteriously stopped.

I'm also experiencing a high pitched whistle at slow speeds, not sure if it's related but it appears to be coming from the same area and preceeds the scraping noise. I wonder if this noise is StabiliTrac related since so far it's been common to Denalis and Escalades.

My mom's 02 tahoe had something like this. I think it turned out to be the tensioner or the a/c compressor.... Don't remember which???

My 92 silverado does the sound you discribe when its cold outside... I think its insuffecient oil flow to the top of the engine.

I doubt that the ladder would be your problem though.

I'ld get those bearing on pulleys checked out.

I would run it thru the carwash, may sound funny but you could have some sand or grit stuck somewhere. At least your truck will be clean.

After my 4th compressor now I have that same noise when I have the AC on and its warm outside. The noise comes from the upper passenger area of the engine.

03 1500HD 10,000 miles

I guess the other compressors were bad and they continued to just pump more oil in, so the pressures were way off. Dont quite understand the whole deal.

They replaced the Clutch/Orifice/R134/Compressor/Seals/Oil.

I have a 2004 Chevy suburban Z71 and it started making this odd noise with less than 1000 miles on it. Doesn't matter if it is in park, or driving down the road, occasionally a noise that sound like squeaking brakes erupts for 5-10 seconds at a time. I can not make it reproduce the noise when I want it to. Any Idea on what could be wrong?

I hate to have to bring it in so soon. Has anyone else heard something like this?

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
