I am looking into purchasing a used Chevrolet Silverado and have several potential options at this point including a '93 and a '95. So far, I have found the following generic information on VINs, but was wondering if anyone knew where to obtain model-specific information. Any help would be appreciated.

 

1st Character

Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured (I already know that 1 or 4 = U.S. and 2 = Canada)

 

2nd Character

Identifies the manufacturer (I already know that G = General Motors and 1 = Chevrolet)

 

3rd Character

Identifies vehicle type or manufacturing division (I don't have any other specific information... can anyone help?)

 

4th - 8th Characters

Identifies vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc. (Again, I don't have any other specific information... can anyone help?)

 

9th Character

Identifies VIN accuracy as check digit

 

10th Character

Identifies the model year (I already know the years such as P = 1993 and S = 1995)

 

11th Character

Identifies the assembly plant for the vehicle (I don't have any other specific information... can anyone help?)

 

12th - 17th Characters

Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled of the manufacturers assembly line (Again, I don't have any other specific information... can anyone help?)

5th digit C=2wd K=4wd

8th digit is the engine P = LT1 etc

 

The more important codes are the RPO codes in the glove box. They can be decoded by the link on the left margin of this site.
