Siamesed cylinders

What is meant by siamesed cylinders or bore? I've read about it in a lot of performance publications, but none explain what it is.

Siamesed cylinders refer to the the fact that the space between the bores in the block are solid (no water jackets).

A good example is the Chevy small block 400 cubic inch engine. Bore is too big for a small block with water jacket between the cylinders.
