Wal-Mart Oil Change

There's a new Wal-Mart down here in the Baltimore area with a nice clean 7-8 bay oil change dept. I was in the store and thought I'd check it out. I spoke to the dude behind the counter who seemed pretty intelligent :D

I asked him if they could do a synthetic change and he told me to pick my oil. I walked into aisles and grabbed some Mobil 1 10-30.

So I had them do a change on the Burb. I stood right there and watched them do it. No problems whatsoever. In fact when they were about to pour the oil in they stopped and told me that the vehicle should have 5-30 according to the database that they have. So I got 5-30

Anyway, I walked out of there with 6-1/2 quarts of Mobil 1 in my sump and a filter and labor for under $40

They even gave me the 1/2 quart bottle of Mobil 1 left over in a ziplock baggy.

So kudos to Carroll Island Wal-Mart. MD

Funny you bring Wal-Mart up...I have been doing my own oil changes for the last year now, but I went to Wal-Mart to buy my oil and usually they have about a 2 hour wait. They had no wait, so I said what the heck...had them do it. I, too, was throughly impressed...vacummed it out, checked all the fluids, and I stood there and watched/listened to the guys as they worked on it. As they went to grease the zerks underneath, I heard them talking about it...one guy said "yeah, its got 11 zerks..." so I was impressed that they even knew how many it had. $23 out the door for all that using Pennzoil 5W-30. It would have cost about $15 to do it myself, so 8 bucks and I saved time and didn't have to get dirty!!

Hmmmm, sounds like i need to take a ride down Eastern Ave. soon and check that out. Is that right there on the corner where Bengies is?

Our local Walmart has been exceptional on oil changes too. However I had an awful experience with one in Myrtle Beach, SC. The tech almost tore the bottom off the wife's Outback trying to get to the filter. Even though I stood there and tried to explain to him, he was clueless. I finally had to have him pull the car out of the bay and let me do it. Anyway, that was there. Point of the story is that Wally Worlds vary like dealers; some are good-some aren't.

Also, at least in our local store, they like to use Fram filters and with all the discussion about Fram quality (or lack thereof) on the net that makes me a little nervous too. Maybe they could use the Supertech filter.

Just my 2 cents.

Vroten :D

Yup. That's the one.

There was one thing that was left to me and that was the resetting of the 'You need an oil change' display on the DIC. How is that done. I did a quick search but came up short.

Oh man, have I got a Walmart Oil change story...

Early last year, I noticed the cheap price for the Mobil 1 oil changes and Fram filter and stopped by. I stood in the garage area watching, because honestly at that price, I expected them to dump dino oil in there...

Everything went fine and I was on my way.

Came time for the next oil change and I stopped by the same place during lunch. After 1.5 hours, I went to pay the bill and saw they charged me for an extra quart of Mobil 1! I questioned it and the tech came inside and said (and I quote) "You came in one quart low so I had to add the extra quart"

I couldn't believe my ears. I asked him to repeat and he said the same thing. I asked him "So if I came in 3 quarts low, would you have added 9 quarts?" His sarcastic reply was No.

After 'discussing' it for another hour, I had the extra quart taken off my bill. Once I got home from work I drained and refilled the oil with the proper amount.

Those fuggin morons will never touch my truck again :D

Well this is a bonehead Wally World story. My father usually takes his 98 K1500 in there for oil changes, and they do the check up on it and notice the tires are getting bald. When they're done they give him a sheet with a price for new tires on it, he said it was a good price, but wanted Steeltex's put on it and paid for the oil change and left. After he left he noticed on the tire sheet it was for 15 inch tires and his truck has 16 inch, I always thought he should have went back and had those tires put on just to see how long it would take them to figure it out. It was a computer printout with the trucks year and model on it, was there a 98 K1500 with 15 inch from the factory?

Although my previous post above praises them, I will say that my mom always goes there with her 2003 expedition...when they changed the filter out they left the old gasket on there...double gasket...not good. All the oil sprayed out on the way home, all over the motor, driveway, etc. They came to our house to fix it and cleaned up the motor!

If it's the same as my truck, try the following.

-Turn the ignition key to "on", not starting the engine.

-Fully depress the gas pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.

You should get a message saying something like "Engine Oil Life Reset"

Hope that helps,

Will

with my 03, i turn the ignition key to the position before start (when you power up the dash gauges)

now pump the gas pedal 3 times quickly. that should reset the monitor. I sometimes have to do it a couple of times to get it to reset.

I have one complaint about the Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Express. Every time I go there they say that it will be 1-2 hours before they can get to my vehicle. They always tell me that they only have one or two guys working. They must have trouble finding reliable employees that show up to work.

I went there two days ago and pulled around back and didn't see any other cars parked outside. At first I thought they were closed but saw that they were open for two more hours. I went inside and saw two vehicles being worked on. I went to the counter and said that I would like an oil change. The girl working behind the counter with purple hair said that it would be one hour before they could start. I didn't realize oil changes took one hour. I promptly left.

They should change the name to "Wal-Mart Tire & Lube Sometime Today"

I went to the local Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil and was out of there in less that ten minutes. It was worth the extra $9.
