Does anyone know what size the nut is on the end of the CV Shaft. And what it torques to? It's on a 1999 Silverado 1500 NBS. Gotta replace one of those wonderful 4wd hubs this weekend

Thanks,

190 ft/lbs for my 3/4 ton Suburban.

DO NOT ROLL vehicle weight on bearing when this nut has been loosened. Will ruin the bearing, as need the preloading from that nut to hold rollers against the race.

$5 bucks for the nut and only dealer has them. Recommend not to reuse them, but even dealers reuse them, as most dealer parts counter don't have them in stock.

Forgot, since wheel/tires off, tough to loosen.

Trick is to start engine and have helper stand on the brakes while you loosen or tighten.

You'll also find out if your brakes are working okay..or..not...

I think I picked up a 36mm at Autozone. Needed it for a different vehicle a while back and it so happens it work for this one as well. I think I paid like $15 for it. You can also buy it and take it back on their loan a tool program but I decided to keep it instead just in case. Good thing I did.

By the way, I changed my front half shaft out. I'm pretty sure you will run into the same problem I did once you yank the hub off. (On my procedure I didn't have to take the hub off to change the half shaft.) When you pull the hub off the splined half shaft it should come off realitively easy. Putting it back on is the real problem with the spline. For some reason it doesn't slip back through that easy. I found out the hard way trying to push it through for about an hour, cussing the whole time. The trick is that the half shaft comes with a nut which has a collar on it. You thread this nut on with the collar going into the hub, then tighten and it pulls the spline through the hub. With you not getting a half shaft I'm not sure where you get this nut with the collar. Maybe Autozone has those as well. I ended up saving this nut incase I every need to change the hubs or another half shaft. I don't think you can use your original nut because there is not enough thread to attach it to and pull the spline through.

Hope this helps I just didn't want you to go through the job and then find out you need to run to the store for a tool or sit there for an hour like I did trying to pull the spline through.
