Problem with Brakes on 2001 Jimmy

Greetings,

 

We have a 2001 GMC Jimmy 4x4 SLE with around 30k miles on it. Yesterday I had to lay on the brakes pretty hard. Now whenever we are slowing down and getting almost to a stop(<5 or so MPH), the ABS is kicking and I can feel the feedback just like when you have come to a quick stop from higher speeds. Everytime you get close to stopping they do this. However, at normal speeds they function just like they are supposed to. I called a buddy at a local shop and he said the rotors are probably warped and will need turned. I am wondering if it is something this simple or a symptom of a much worse problem.
