2000 5.7 timing question

Hi all, first post here.

I have a 2000 Chevy with the 5.7. I recently had to do the intake manifold gaskets due to a coolant leak. When I pulled the distributor I marked everything and got it as close as possible going back in. I was going to get the timing checked afterwards, but was told as long as there is no Check Engine light set, the timing is in the acceptable range.

My fuel mileage ever since has been around 12.5 where it used to be around 14.5 to 15. I was wondering if the timing does infact need to be set on a certain number, and if it was slightly off, would my mileage be affected. I would think so.

Can I check the timing at home, or do i need a scanner?

Thanks!

Travis

Welcome to the FORUM! :D

The base timing should be checked any time the distributer is removed/moved...

However I 'm not sure of the procedure on a '00 engine...If you have a service manual (Haynes,Chiltons etc..) it should tell you if you need a SCAN tool or not
