I'm trying to get my Celica running good so I'll have a car to drive back and forth to work this summer. As some of you might remember it had a good 350k miles on it when steam started coming out the exhaust. Well today I finally got around to tearing the motor down. Figured I either had a cracked head, or a blown head gasket.

So I get the cylider head off and I can not find anything that says 100% that it had a blown head gasket or cracked head. I tore the head gasket up getting the head off so there isn't much to go by there, but the metal crush rings were not blown out like I have seen before. The only thing that actualy indicate that water was getting inside the motor was that #4 cylinder has just a little bit of rust on the wall, and the piston is free of carbon unlike the other 3 (like it was steam cleaned).

What can I check or do to rule out the possibilities of a cracked or warped head. I'm trying to get this thing running as cheap as possible yet doing the job right at the same time.

Got pics on the way, I swear you can fit a SBC in this baby. Thats a ways down the road though.

well, a cheap way to go WOULD be an SBC, you can pick up a 350 TBI for nothing, a 350 carb for negitive nothing, and it'll almost never break.

good luck on fixinf the problem

I plan to go that direction some day, just not right now. I would still have to buy a tranny, drive shaft, and fab the mounts for motor and tranny. I don't need a project vehicle for a DD, although it would be one hell of a sleeper  . I'm trying to pay some bills so I can get another f-body :flag: .

I also need to know what I can spray on the machined surfaces (cylinder walls) to keep them from rusting? The car is outside and already has a little bit of rust on some places.
