Squeak

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra Z71 that has had a squeaking noise at idle and while driving. I replaced the main belt and the noise disappeared. However, the next day the noise returned only while driving, once I reached 1000 RPM, it stops when I lift off the accelarator. I replaced the alternator and it did not help. I replaced the tensioner and the squeak disappeared for a day and has returned. Has anyone experienced a similiar problem?

what about the ac belt and tensioner?

 

is it possilbe to take the serpentine belt off and spin the other pulleys and see if one of those is squeaking?

I own a 2001 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 with A/C on a separate belt.

I purchased the truck w/64K and it had a slight squeak coming from the belt(s)

So, as a preventative measure I replaced the following parts with factory GM parts:

 

1) All tensioners

2) Idlers

3) Belts x 2

4) Alternator (was over charging so I changed it out)

5) Inspected and cleaned all pulleys

 

After the installation the squeak disappeared for a day or two then returned. It was driving me crazy...

I removed the belts once again, checked all pulleys and new parts for defect, cleaned all pulleys w/brake clean solvent and dried w/compressed air.

Reinstalled belts - noise came back after 1/2 hour of driving.

I contacted a friend who has worked for GM 20 years and explained the problem.

He inspected the belts and pulleys and put electronic digel lube/grease on the belts, I went nuts then asking him why he put a lubricant on the belts (man that’s a NO - NO)

He stated it would stop the noise. Well it did for about 5-minutes then the (NEW) belts were really screaming and not only that. They were now reduced to junk.

So here is where I am with it:

 

1) Dissolved my friendship with this mechanic

2) removed all belts and cleaned all pulleys and belt related components with brake-clean - Air dry.

3) Replaced belts with new ones from GM

 

Noise disappeared for one day and returned w/slight chirp at low RPM

 

Today - 2.17.07 Process of elimination:

1) Removed all belts one by one and ran engine

2) Checked water pump pulley, clutch fan, PS pump, damper, A/C clutch - rule out all

3) Found main serpentine as problem belt. (Only has a few hundred miles on it)

 

Inspected belt - found no fraying - verified cleanliness of belt and reinstall.

Operation was quiet until driving time reached 30 minutes - squeak returned loudly.

I took a spray bottle of water and sprayed a very fine mist on the main belt in various areas until the chirp stopped. It would stay quiet for a few seconds then return.

I removed the main belt and started engine - noise gone...duh... no belt turning...

Tomorrow I am going to an area NAPA store and purchase a GATES belt and try that.

Maybe GM had a bad lot of belts for a while...

This has been a nightmare and a lot of work!!

I will write back with my GATES belt results so stay tuned...
