Aftermarket Tow Mirrors

So I got sick and tired of these aftermarket strap-on mirrors that shake like hell till they fall off or have such a Pi$$ poor design that they hardly mount up.

 

I just got a new enclosed car hauler and went out searching for mirrors. You can't see ANYTHING with the stock mirrors. Just the front of the trailer.

 

Of course my 03 2500HD has the powered lighted turn signals and heated glass. All of which I wanted to keep.

 

I looked all over and found very little useful info so hopefull this will help others decide. I decided to buy the Schefenacker ttt mirrors.

 

$500 and about two hours later I have them installed. Installation isn't bad. You are required to fish some wire and install a few splices. The door panels require removal as well as the drivers side dash.

 

The instructions were pretty good except for one step that requires the removal of the door speakers. The instructions did not match my truck. I have the BOSE system and could not see how to remove the speaker without causing some possible damage. As it turned out, I was able to access through another hole.

 

DOWNSIDE:

The down side is that the red turn signal delta is no longer in the mirror (I liked it there). There is a yellow indicator on the outside tip of the mirror that flashes with the signal and it is not visibale to the driver, only to neighboring vehicles. There is also, incorporated in the turn signal, a yellow marker light which comes on with the headlights. Unfortunatly, this light does not extiguish when you override the autolights.

 

But what really ticked me off was that I had to remove my vent visors to install the mirrors. The two products will NOT work with each other. I figured safety outweighed the visors usefullness so I removed them. But it Pi$$es me off.

The main mirrors exibit a slight vibtation at highway speed but not bad.

 

UPSIDE:

You can SEE! The mirrors main glass is power and works like the stock mirror. There is also a smaller convex mirror inboard of the main mirror which is manual. Manually you may slide the entire mirrors outward as required when towing, slide them back in when they are not needed.

I am not a Ford man but I like their setup with extendable mirrors that can be retracted when not towing.

My understanding is that Schefenacker actually makes the factory Ford towing mirrors.

 

Anyway, I just installed these mirrors on my Suburban 2500. But I did not hook up the yellow wire, which powers the front-facing amber clearance lights. Does everyone hook that up? Seems like a lot of work for a function that didn't exist in the stock mirrors. Any reviews of this function?

I like my stock vertical camper mirrors...Makes it a lot easier when I'm pulling a trailer or for checking the rear as I'm backing up. I rarely have to turn my head now to see if someone's in the other lane.

 

And uh, why are we posting in a 3 year old thread?
