Tire pressure monitor reprogram??

I have a friend who has a 2004 Yukon and he just installed factory 17" wheels with the sensors after having the 16"(with sensors) on it. Of course he now has a "Service tire monitor" message on the DIC. The local dealer has had no luck reprogramming the system. Is there any way to reprogram it that he can do himself? Thanks

Yeah, he can reprogram the sensors himself. First, he has to stand on one leg, spin to the right twice while chanting "I love GM". :banghead:

Seriously, here is the procedure:

1. Set parking brake

2. Turn ignition switch to run, but don't start vehicle.

3. Turn headlamp switch from off to on 4 times within 3 seconds. The horn will do a double chirp and the TPM light will flash. This is the indication that it is in matching mode. The light will continue to flash until done.

4. Start with the driver's side front tire. Increase or decrease the tire pressure in that tire for 10 seconds. The horn will chirp once within 15 seconds to signal that sensor has been learned. If the horn doesn't chirp, repeat the procedure until it does. Then move to the passenger side front tire, passenger side rear tire, then finally the driver's side rear tire doing the same procedure each time. Check to see if the TPM light is still flashing after the last confirmation chirp for the driver's side rear tire. If the light is still flashing, turn the key off, and fill the tires to the correct pressure.

I would almost bet that the dealer probably tried to use the magnet for programming the sensor. This will not work for the 2004 model. I know for a fact that this procedure works, because this is what I did for our '04 Tahoe when I rotated the tires a couple weeks ago.

Oh, BTW, was the same tire pressure used for the new wheel/tire as the original? This does make a difference. If the pressure is too high, he will have to get a different sensor.

They are different sensors, he bought the 17" wheels/tires as a "take off" package. He has whatever sensors the 17"s came with. The reprogram proceedure isn't working.

Probably asking the obvious, but did the dealer hook up the Tech2 to check to determine if all the sensors on the new wheels are good? Or check the passenger door module (PDM)? Is the vehicle learning some of the sensors, but not all of the sensors? The vehicle will chirp the horn on the sensors it does learn. There are a couple of TSB's that basically if the sensor is not learning, check the sensor and the PDM. If they are take-offs, the sensors should be good. Puzzling....

One more question. Positive there are sensors on the wheels? They should be a large metal stem with metal valve caps. Just making sure that it is not the brass/rubber stems.

Like I said it's a friend's truck so I can't answer all of your questions. I do know that it isn't even learning the first wheel, there is no chirp. I will print out your response and give it to him to take to the dealer. Thanks for all of your help, I appreciate it.
