Need help with brake lights

Recommended Posts

OK here is the deal.

All the lights work, turn, emergency flashers, running lights...You name it, they come on, and act like they're supposed to.

But the brake lights will not come on...I hooked up the trailer, and it doesn't light them up either. Althought the running lights, and blinkers work fine there too.

I put a new doohicky (technical term for that switching box on the brake pedal assembly) on, and they still wont come on.

Fuses are fine, no codes, and the truck stops just like it's supposed to.

Any suggestions?

I heard that the doohickey can be adjusted... If not here is how to fix...

1) Roll down window.

2) Extend left arm out window and point hand down.

3) Apply brakes, and hope a young driver isn't behind you.

Unfortunately, whenever my arm goes out the window....A certain finger always extends. This is a reflex, and I can't stop it. Even the younger drivers get that particular hand signal.

Could be a bad directional switch(turn signal)...the white wire from the brake lamp switch goes to the directional switch then to the tail lamps...dumb question time...do your hazard flashers stop when you press the brake pedal? Do you have a 3rd brake light? If so,does that work? I would still check the new brake lamp switch to make sure its not defective...or if you have a tilt column you may have a broken wire going to the directional switch...get a manual w/a basic wiring diagram and trace it...Good Luck

All the signals work, hazards work, and they keep flashing with the brake pedal depressed.

No third brake light.

Thanks for the ideas. :) I'll be digging back into it tomorrow.

Sounds like a defective brake light switch or a break in the wire to the directional switch or even a bad directional switch...get the testlight out :):D
