Locking Rear Diff Noise

Ok yesterday I was leaving circuit city.  I was basically on a sheet of slippery snow.  Hit the gas rear spun and i hear a banging noise.  Third time in about 2 months.  Sounds like the rear is exploding.  Let off the gas and i go fine.  

 

Today i am thinking what it could be and i think:

 

 

it is the hitch ball i have in the reciever (what are those called).  The reese thing that sticks out?  Well i think the rear sort of hops and there is a slight gap and this bangs against the receiver making a banging noise.

 

Sound right anyone have this same problem?

Well, maybe but,....

I know that when the GM G80 lockers engage they sometimes make a loud bang. I would bet you heard the locker kick in on the surface you described. Not really sure why, but we hear them do it a lot.

Have you tried removing the hitch from the receiver. Run the truck w/o anything in the receiver and see if it goes away. I have a hitch and a locking hitch pin, and there is a little play in mine too, but I have never heard of any noise like you describe. I run with my hitch in all the time. Something else you might look at is the spare tire and the rack it's on. Is any of that loose?

no i didnt take it out yet.  Just thought of the problem last night (to cold to go out and take it off)

 

I know its not the spare cause the spare tire is in the bed locked up with a chain

Off topic, I'd take your hitch out of your reciever anyways, otherwise your risk it rusting in there.  My dad left his in his on his old work truck for one winter and after that it never came out again.

 

On topic, I've got the G80 locker and If I have the windows down I can hear a clunk if I gas it around a corner, but I've yet to hear a loud bang from it.
