I've got a Sony 3.2 megapixel digital. I forget what the model number is, but I think it was like 260 bucks, but I'm not sure, I got it as a chirstmas gift. Make sure when you do get a camera, get another memory card/stick with as much stoage space as you can afford. I picked up a 256 MB card for like $60 and I can fit almost 800 pics on it, depending on quality. But you will definately take a lot more pictures with a digital, since you can just delete them if they turn out crappy. Good luck.

Get the highest Megapixels you can and take your pictures with the highest settings. That way when you print them out or shrink them down they look better. Mine is a Samsung 3.2 MP, it makes pretty good pictures and I can get around 170 pictures on the highest settings w/256MB. If you look around you should be able to get a pretty decent one for around $300.00. Do a google search on digital camera reviews.

I work for a company that does photography and the camera-nuts at work recommend Canon or Nikon. They seem to have the best lenses and features (Nikon being the best). If you want a zoom, then make sure it is an optical zoom. Some cameras have a "digital" zoom that only destroy's the picture quality.

Like others have said, get the highest pixel camera you can afford and stuff a big memory chip in it.

I just bought a Canon Powershot A75 (3.2MP) from Best Buy a while Back. Then, I bought a 256MB CF card from ebay (it came with a 32) and some 1800NIH batteries. I like the canon for the features... movies with sound, manual shutter modes, all sorts of good stuff. A good site for reviews is www.dpreview.com. Good luck!

Though my camera will be out of your prices range.

I shoot with the Nikon D2h. I love the camera even though it is only 4.1 Mpix. The Digital SLRs have come along way. I do like the point and shoots (my wife has a canon A70) but the SLRs will put out a better product. Here is a picture of the moon from last night on the D2h.
