txpkup Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 Can anyone tell me how to install new U-joints. 99 silverado. I was going to replace all four and was just interested in saving around $150 Never done it before. Thanks in advance!
freaker Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 I just finished replacing the rear drive shaft u-joints on my 99 Yukon, I hope this helps! Block the front tire first so the truck won't roll when the d-shaft is removed. It helps to have the tranny in neutral so the d-shaft can be rolled. - Remove 4 bolts holding 'c' clamps over rear u-joint (At the rear end) (11mm) - Pull the drive shaft out of the transmission and take it to the work bench - If factory u-joint still there, you will have to get the plastic that is keeping the u-joint caps in place out. You will see the 1/8" hole beside the caps in the yoke. Heat the yoke until the plastic "flows" out make sure it out, it will make taking the caps off easier. - Place the d-shaft in a secure vise, using a socket, hammer the cap down until the opposite cap is clear from the yoke and can be removed. - Reverse and remove the other cap - Take out the old u-joint and replace with new. Install without caps and install caps after new u-joint is in place in the d-shaft. Hammer caps in place, or squeeze in place in the vise. One the caps are in place correctly, the groove in the caps should be visible from inside of the yoke. Tap in place the "C" clips provided. - I had to hammer the yoke out a little to get in 'c' clips in properly, I guess the yoke closed together a little in the removal process. The opposide end is the same as above, except on the transmission end there are 4 caps to install. HINT: wrap the rear U-joint in tape to keep the caps on while your re-installing it. Clean the section of the d-shaft that goes in the tranny so the seal isn't scared during re-installation. Push the d-shaft in the tranny and re-install the 'c' caps and bolts and BOOM ... your done!! The front, I haven't done, so I'll keep an eye on the replies for someone else to add that part! Lotsa Luck!!
GMCSierra04 Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Make sure you mark the driveshaft's position to the tranny before removal to eliminate any possible driveline vibrations.
99silveradoz71 Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 I think RyanBab just did his on his 00 Rado, he might have some insight to share.
remyrazz Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Make sure you mark the driveshaft's position to the tranny before removal to eliminate any possible driveline vibrations. I had my u-joints replaced, I have a vibration, how do I check that the shop put driveshaft back in the correct position? Sorry to steal thread? Remy
