Paint coming off!

Recommended Posts

I have a 2003 Tahoe Z71 and the radio button paint is coming off just from pushing them and generally using them normally. Is this supposed to happen? I hope not. Can anyone tell me if they have had the same problem? I think the black "paint" on the radio controls should not come off just from using them. Did they not get "sealed" or something?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Warranty? get it replaced.

I have 120,000 miles on my 99 silverado. 119,598 of those miles are with the radio on, with massive volume and station changing. no signs of wear like that on mine.

'HDChuck01' my old ladies 2000 Impala is the same way. (The radios are the same btw).

It's definitely a problem with the radios, and the sad thing is there's no easy way to fix it! Not even sure you can get replacement buttons only.

Back on the Impala, we didn't have it a year and the paint was chipping off.

I thought it was her finger nails doing it, but I guess I wrong?

What's funny, she was asking me to fix that the other day, oh and btw I dought GM will cover it. It probably falls under normal wear, but we know isn't!

I havn't seen any TSB??? We might be screwed on this one.

Same thing happen to the wifes Trailblazer....It was on 02 and only had 34k on it buy 10k the buttons were all peeling. It had the Bose sound system. I chipped off all the loose stuff - then colored in the white with a Sharpie.....then traded it in on the 04 Z71 Tahoe.

As mentioned earlier...... attempt to claim "warranty". I notice many folks are reluctant to use their warranty. Don't try to fix this yourself, otherwise, the stealership many not honor the warranty.

Had a similar problem with my 95 Monte Carlo. Mostly because the CD player ejected the CD everytime the engine was started so before I shut it off I'd press recall so I knew what song to return it to. The car was long past warranty when that happened.

My "new" TrailBlazer had the same problem on the AC fan button. Can't figure that out since it has an auto setting, haven't touched a button except off and auto since I bought it. At any rate I took it into the dealer and they replaced the whole AC unit. If your still under warranty take it in! If not I guess you'll just have to live with it.

That should absolutely be covered under warranty. I'm sure the dealers have been seeing it for years.

Here's a little tip for getting warranty work done at a dealership. I've worked in dealerships for years, and over the last 10 to 15 years, CSI (Customer Satisfaction Index), has become a very big deal. When dealerships have high CSI's, GM gets real friendly with them. They can win awards, get cars from the factory at a better price, get more, desireable new cars, etc. Alot of service writers, techs., etc, get monthly bonuses for good CSI.

Tell the writer to do the right thing and guarantee him a 100%, Completely Satisfied Survey, and he should become very helpful.

Yep, I agree with budhayes3, I too work at a GM dealer, we love 100% completely satisfied surveys.

Take it in,they should have no problem changing it,we've seen quite a few here do the same thing and we've changed them all

I want to know why they feel they need to have "painted" buttons, dashes and other interior peices. For crying out loud, the bulk of the interior is made of injected plastic, why not make the PLASTIC the desired color instead of painting it???

The lengths people (GM) will go to so save a buck!??!??!

just so happens i work in an plastics factory. :flag: and to answer your question theyve probably saved tons of cash painting ( actually its hot stamped ) :) rather than molding lettering in. the cost would close to double. probably cheaper in the long run 4 them 2 cause most would last past the warrenties. and i know about paint coming off look at the year of my truck ( the paint is original ):)

Thanks for all the input. I'll try the stealership and the 100% satisfied if they fix me up.

i had my radio replaced under my gmpp for this and the lights behind the buttons burning out (hvac control lights burned out too). covered under warranty w/o a hassle!

Well, went to the dealership and they said GM will not let them replace it under warranty. Got the 1-800 number from the service technician and called "GM Customer Satisfaction" line. After being on hold for 25 minutes total they said GM would not be able to satisfy me. File went down as dis-satisfied. She did ask some interesting questions before she put me on hold for ten more minutes to talk to the dealership. A few of the questions: How many GM's have you purchased in the last five years? Do you plan on purchasing a new vehicle in the next year? Did you purchase an extended warranty? My answers: 2, no and no. I guess 2 might have been OK but the last 2 should have been yes? What a load of crap! I explained I have an '01 Silverado and the paint is not coming off of the radio in it and they must have purchased these defective radios from a bad supplier but she insisted it was normal wear. How can GM expect loyalty from their customers when they treat you like crap over a radio??? I was actually considering a new Cobalt next year but that idea is scrapped.

Yep, these painted interiors are ridiculous. I have an '00, and any little thing that touches the dash causes the paint to flake off. WTF was GM thinking? Like Elwood said, they could have just as easily made the plastic the desired color instead of painting it. I hate going to the dealership. I've been the local dealership a couple of times just to order some parts, and both times the guy behind the counter in the parts department acts like I'm bothering him.

    • It seems fine because it pulls everything out of a hot engine. I’m not going to worry about a thimble full with 5K oil changes with synthetic oil. Every other oil change is at Honda they pull the plug. I watch them through the process. It turns out going to Honda what amounts to their normal oil change intervals.
    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
