Parking Brake issues

When my parking brake is set all the way it doesn't hold my truck at all. It used to work perfectly, but I drove a little bit without taking them off. Ever since that. . .nothing. The cable is pulled tight. It couldn't have worn down the pads could it have? Any ideas what might fix them?

popular topic lately. Here's what you do.

Go to your parts store. Buy new rear rotors, rear e-brake shoes (1 per side), and check to see if you need rear pads also, which you may.

Replace the rear brakes completely (if needed)

But be sure to back off your cable adjustment FIRST!!

I just did this stuff on my 02 Silverado, and within 30 minutes the job was completed.

Indeed there are a lot of posts on this forum re: the parking brake, so search thru them. The original drum-in-hat pbrake assembly was prone to improper wear/drag under some circumstances. After reading some ppl had to replace their entire hubs I had the updated clip assembly installed even though my pbrake worked ok.

When doing the yearly state inspection the guys would always test the pbrake before even officially starting the inspection - they said they were failing a LOT of gm trucks for parking brakes that would not hold at idle when in gear.

before you go off and buy 400$ in parts like an above poster said take off the rotors and inspect the condition. all you may have to do is turn the starwheel adjustment out to tightenup the shoes.
