Key stuck in ignition

My wife just came home and informed me that the key was stuck in the ignition switch on our new Tahoe (two months old, 5k miles). Sure enough, it would not come out. After piddling with it for about 5 minutes, I finally got it to come out. It seems to work fine now.

 

Has this ever happened to anyone? Will it happen again? Is there anything that I need to worry about?

thats weird, maybe a rough edge on the key or something thats getting caught on a pin, thats all i could think of, or maybe it wasnt turned back all the way

i asked them done at chevy garage and they said they never had a key stuck.they did say DONT put any weight on the keys as this will wear out the ignition switch. they said women load heavy junk on the key rings and that is bad.

that happend once to me right after I got my truck new. I jiggled the wheel a little, and made sure the shifter was in park,(kinda jiggled that too) and it finally came out. Hasn't happened since.

well if you live on a hill and turn the wheels guess what. your going to have it hard lock a lot. the first time this happen to me I called a tow truck to take mine to the dealer. thay lifed the front end and the key became free. it happens to me about twice a week, to get the key out i must turn the stearing wheel hard to the left till the key will free.

 

you just got to love that anti theft device. its keeps the key in the truck.

Now I've heard it all. I think I've decided that I won't be buying anything new. It seems to me that NBS trucks just have too many quarks and things that I'd rather not deal with. I think I'll find me a nice 97-98 OBS.

The 97-98s do that too. the 2002 up trucks no longer have sttering wheel lock.

Usually when that happens, the steering wheel is locked, although 99-2door just mentioned that the 02 and newer vehicles don't have steering wheel locks. Wiggling the steering wheel side to side while turning the key used to work.

I have seen that on my work truck its a "ford" F-250 and one day i couldnt get the key out. i pissed around with it for 5 minutes it wasnt just a dull key or something like that cause i turned it back and forth and in and out then the next day i went to take it out, came out first try.

If the GM trucks are anything like the GM cars, there is a mechanical solenoid as part of the ignition switch that will prevent the key from being removed in the event the solenoid fails. This was a common problem with the Grand Prix and that vehicle had a manual release button located on the center console to allow the key to come out if that part failed. Replacing that solenoid was a large job as you had to disable the SRS system, pull the wheel, remove the covers, etc etc etc....

 

Yours may have been stuck or possibly the gear lever wasn't completely locked in place but this is also another possibility.
