6.0L Gas Milage

Just purchased a '02 1500HD a few weeks ago, only gone through a couple of tanks, but getting the best of 9.5 mpg. This normal? The truck has some miles on it, and the tires are slightly bigger than stock I think (255 85's). WTF!

ahhh...that is the exact reason I sold my 03 HD with the 6.0. I got 10mpg city AND highway..never got better. I had put headers, exhaust, intake...nothing helped.

I hope yours gets better. I sold mine and got a duramax and I love the mileage.

good luck

I'm getting just over 16 mpg with my 6.0 SS.

I get 16-18 highway and 13 city on mine.

Ditto.I get 15-17 and 12-13 in town but I run at 75 on highway a lot. I installed westers and magnaflow and it seemed to help a little. But of course I need surgery on my right foot as it seems to have to much lead in it

I have 4 tanks through my '03 since buying it used. First 3 were 16.9, 17.7, 17.1, and the last was 15.3. The last was mainly in town, while the first three were mainly highway.

Welcome to the 6.0L, I get an average of about 8mpg around town, mainly hilly area, short trips, and the truck is stock. Highway empty 15mpg, highway towing 12mpg. Its a big heavy truck and you just got to feed it. The Olds is AWD with the 4.2 I6, and it only gets 13mpg in town. Thats why we picked up a Vibe, something that gets mpg 24+.

it didn't help that my 6.0 came with the 4speed auto and 4:11 gears... that has a lot to do with it, but I hoped the headers would help, they didn't.

Yep, I've got the 6.0 with a four-speed transmission and the 4.10 rear. She weighs about 5,800 pounds and I average about 12mpg (50/50 split of city and highway). I get about 15-18mph just doing highway speeds.

Add me to list!!! Aside from keeping it in 2WD & not Auto 4WD, get another gas card  Whats funny is I can drive my 94 Vette like a raped ape, and still get better mileage than driving my 6L like an old lady on quaaludes.

Thanks for the input everyone. I installed a K & N filter in it the other day, not sure if this will even make a dent but anyway....gonna do plugs and wires I think next..its does have 86k highway miles on it...maybe its time?

I will be honest...my ONLY complaint with my old 6.0 was the mileage, thats it. That thing would pull my car and trailer with no trouble at all.

just sucks when your gas bill gets higher than your truck payment!! LOL

He's getting 9mpg with 285's. He's calculating the the MPG based on the MPH/speedo from the 245's.

I get 8-10mpg highway/city with my 285's on my 2500hd 4x4 ....I would guess that I am getting 13-15mpg city/highway at best.

If you wanted gas mileage should have gotten a car or smaller truck.

My truck sucks me dry in gas but I dont complain. With the hurricane here, I filled 4 times in 2 days. Mostly every 40 miles to keep the tank full since supplies are really rare here.
