The 1500's have a smaller rear end. My 2500HD D/A has a 11.5" rear axle, the 1500's have a 10.5" one. I'm pretty sure both the front and rear springs are much heavier in the 2500HDs. I think what he means is there is not a lot of difference between a 1500HD and a 2500LD, a 2500HD is basically a single wheel 1 ton.

Your buddy is up in the night. There is alot of difference between the 1500 and the 2500 HD (1500HD is short for 2500LD). The rear half of the frame, rear axle, rear and front springs, frame crossmembers, exhaust pipes, cab mounts, bumber mounts, and yes brakes. Just go for a ride in each and feel which truck rides like a "real HD".

If your 2500HD has the 6.0L engine then it has the same engine, transmission, brakes, wheels, tires and axels and rear springs as a 1500HD. The front T-bars are rated slightly lighter on the 1500HD. GVWR on a 1500HD is 8600#, which was considerred 2500HD (not LD) until 2001. As you've mentioned the rear frame section is different, as are the cab and bed mounts. A 1500HD can have an auto-trac t-case while a 2500HD can't. 1500HD could have 3.73 or 4.10 gears, 2500HD 6.0L has 4.10 gears.

A 6.0L 2500HD has more in common with a 1500HD than it does with other 2500HDs. 8.1L and diesel 2500HDs have a larger rear axel, different transmisions and stronger front diff.

If they were the same, they wouldn't make both...

Putting a 3600 pound cube of 8" block in the bed of each truck and cruising down the freeway at 65 mph should resolve any dispute.

The 2500HD's have the same size brakes regardless of engine and they are larger than the 1500HD. The wheels and tires on the 1500HD, 2500(ld) and 2500HD can all be the same too depending upon options selected.

As said earlier...the 1500HD is an 8600 GVW. It is the same as the current 2500LD models. Before 2001, an 8600 GVW was considered a heavy 3/4 ton. A 7200 GVW was a light duty 3/4 ton. A 9200 GVW was a 1 ton single rear wheel, and the 10,500 GVW was a 1 ton dual rear wheel truck. The 8600 GVW was in a class by itself, having heavier brakes, suspension, frame and axles than the 7200 GVW and smaller 1/2 ton trucks. The 9200 and 10,500 GVW one ton trucks had larger brakes, axles and suspensions than the 8600 GVW.

Due to lack of demand, the 7200 GVW 3/4 ton light duty was phased out in 2000. The 2500HD was renamed as simply a 2500, while the 1 ton single rear wheel 9200 GVW became the 2500HD. The 8600 GVW can be had with a 3.73 rear end with the 6.0L, while the 9200 GVW only comes with the 4.10 in the 6.0L.

The 1500HD, although an 8600 GVW, is most likely badged "1500" because of its payload capacity (which is reduced because of the crew cab). While the payload capacity is quite good, it is not equal to what a true 3/4 ton rating is.

surely they wouldn't down grade just cause it has the base motor. could see if the 1500hd and the 2500ld were simular. 2500hd is the smallest ext cab model that is available with a 5 speed, well that is list as an option.

I don't think the 1500HD's use the 8 lug wheels do they? There is also a RPO for the HD brakes on the 2500HDs (atleast on mine)
