maximumrebel1 Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 Hey I need everyones .02 if u have knowledge on this issue. I screwed my EGR pipe up beyond repair so I decided to cover up the hole where it used to go in behind the TB. I'm pretty sure I covered it good but obviously my SES light came on. What should I do next? take it some where to be fixed or completely block it off and get the SES light off? I've heard that taking it off hurts gas mileage which is unacceptable but as far as emmisions I don't have testing in my area so it's not an issue. Thanks for any advice.

maximumrebel1 Posted September 15, 2004 Author Posted September 15, 2004 Didn't know what room to put it in but it wasn't a mistake. Besides the SES light their is nothing wrong so far. I suggest this mod to anyone who thought about doing it. Think about it how can putting old exhaust gas in your intake gumming it all up with carbon be good? I know GM wouldn't have done it for no reason but emissions isn't a reason for me.

Long as you dont have to be able to pass a sniff test.
95whtZR2 Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 The EGR is to help heat up your engine quicker, it prolongs the life of your engine by getting it up to operating temperature quicker.... So there are upsides to stuff the factory does... Tom

It is on there to help burn off some of the unburned gas in the exhaust. It somewhat helps to reduce emissions on the vehicle. That said, if EGR is so great and helpful, then why did they get rid of EGR on the 02's??

I dunno, maybe they want more money in the servie departments(doubt it though)... or maybe they finally found a better way with the newer engine designs and such to heat the engine up quicker, and to reduce emissions more effectively, and without robbing as much power... There are always reasons for doing things, it just depends on if it is worth it to them to do so. It is always a tricky game trying to guess why people, and companies, do things that seem weird, maybe some day they might shed some light on all of the mysterious things they have done... Tom
budhayes3 Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 The EGR also helps to lower combustion temperatures and reduce Nox emissions. I used to see cars come in to the shop pinging, and one of the first things we'd check was EGR, and half of the time it wasn't working or the passages were clogged with carbon. Many manufacturers have found new ways to reduce Nox emissions, allowing for EGR deletion. I know that Toyota uses variable valve timing to achieve this, not sure what GM is doing though...I'd like to find out.

So there are upsides to stuff the factory does... Nope. You might be confusing EGR with the old heat riser system that allows warm air drawn over the exhaut manifold to be drawn into the intake. In general, EGR isn't enabled until the engine is already up to operating temperature. The parameters that control EGR in modern engines are typically based upon engine temp, time at temp, engine RPM, manifold vacuum, fuel trim, throttle position, and maybe a few more including road speed. You don't want EGR when the engine is cold and at low throttle since it will dilute the fuel charge too much.
