2nd gear takeoffs?

On my 1993 Z71 with a 4L60E tranny, if I put the gear selector in position 2 on the selector, the truck takes off in 2nd gear not 1st!

I thought maybe this was unique to my truck, so on our 2001 Blazer I tried the same thing, with the gear selector in 2, it takes off in 2nd.

Is this a design characteristic? Does your truck do this too?

This is a feature engineered into the trucks.  The reason behind this, is to help out in slippery situations.  If the truck starts out in 2nd gear, it reduces the torque to the rear wheels and is supposed to help you get started with-out spinning the tires.  It actually helps some until the tires break loose and then they just spin faster!!!
