Brake pads needed!

Recommended Posts

Hey the front brakes on my '01 Z-71 is squealing the caliper says Bosch do they

make replacement pads or do I need to pay umpty-ump bucks at the dealer since

Raybestos and Wagner both suck, all grades.

Have a great one!

It was time to change the pads and one of the rotors was rusted due to stock caliper, so I changed the rotors and pads with some discount autopart store brands (Murry's in Ohio). They squeak all the time. I have taken them off on each side, front and back, and sanded the rotors, thinking glazing might be the problem. Still squeaking.

I should have paid the money and bought the OEM or at least a performance grade. I am fixing to do that now. So please post your recommandations.

I've not heard anything bad about EBC or Hawk pads. No experience with either, I used Raybestos on my old truck, won't have to do my 2000's brakes for a while...

Call your local dealer for a price quote on OE pads, just make sure your sitting down. This is my 2nd silverado my first was a 99, now have a 2003.

I average 30-40K miles per year, put several sets on the 99 just bought all (4) sets for the 03 (NAPA auto).

My OEM were all ceramic I assume yours are too, don't take the cheap way out and buy the semi matelic trust me.

The local Chevy stealer quoted me something like $350.00 for all (4) sets. parts only, does not include labor.

I have purchased (3) complete sets of (4) from NAPA so far for around $150.00 per set and have been very satisfied with the performance, no fading, no squeeling, a lot less brake dust than non ceramic.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: If I remember correctly the 99 had drums in rear/disc front.

The 03 has disks all around. When I do mine I usually lube the caliper

pins lightly with antisize when reinstalling, so I can remove them easily

next time. Also don't know if you already aware, but the caliper pins take

specific type of torx or star alan key type tool, I got one that is attatched to

socket, so I could use a ratchet. I remember breaking those bolts loose for

the first time was a beee otch. Had to use a long breaker bar.

Mobil makes GM-Goodwrench Oil,AC-Delco makes the filters (oil,air,fuel,trans,cabin-air and pcv valves)

Their are a few different kind of AC-Delco/GM brake pads however, you have your "OEM" ones, which are the same ones that came from the factory, then you have your "Durastop" ones in two grades,semi-metallic and ceramic.

I recommend either the "OEM" or ceramic ones, :D from past experiences here at the dealership I would stay away from the semi-metallic ones. (lots of brake dust and sqealing)

here's my $0.02 worth:

my inner rear right pad was down alot compared to all the others (standard problem.. I have the caliper shields and front (rear wheel) well flaps now...)..

So, there I was looking for all four pads for the rear brakes, at a dealership I have bought alot of stuff from...

He gave me some ridiculous price for OEM ones... He laughed too then came up with AC Delco, DuraStop, GM# 18039620. Parts guy said they are all made by Raybestos, exact same as the other ones at higher price, and only have the backings painted different [blue or red]. We compared the pads in both boxes, and i sure couldn't tell. The cheaper ones came in at 1/3 the price of what he was supposed to recommend.

They seem to be wearing fine. no squeal, or f&%$ck all problems.

The truck stops OK too.

If anyone who reads this thinks I got sold a pile of bs, then please let me know.

I upgraded my pads all around with Satisfied's Pro Ceramic pads. They're not so bad price-wise either - about $70 front, $50 rear. I'd say that they made a big difference in braking performance, even with using the stock rotors. But, just like stock, they need a little heat in them before they work their best. Since I haven't had them on for that long, I can't vouch for longevity yet.

I picked them up at Tirerack.com.

I absolutely love my Praise Dyno brakes, pretty sure I heard about em here. Improved braking over stock, no noise, hardly any dust (not that I ever let the wheels get dirty enough to notice). I got front and rear pads, front and rear slotted rotors, and e-brake shoes for less than $750. Here's the website: www.praisedynobrake.com.

Actually, the filters are made by different companies under the AC-Delco name. For example, Champion labs manufactures the oil filters. They also manufacture the Mobil 1 filters with a different filtering element. It is also very likely there are dual sources for all of the parts.

Yikes.

I was talkin about decent factory rotors and renewed pads for $50.

Someone here sellin $hit or what?? Yikes

I feel that I paid a good price for what I got...still cheaper than buying from the dealer and a superior product IMO. The Praise Dyno stuff is performance oriented, and that's what I was looking for. After going through 2 sets of factory rotors I wasn't gonna dump big $$ and have my new stuff rust out also. So I checked a bunch of forums and this was what I came up with...called em up, liked what they had to say, and had them ship me the whole deal. Customer service was excellent and the parts showed up at my doorstep in less than a week (from Texas to New Jersey). Plus, I was really happy that their R&D vehicle was a NBS truck.

If a year goes by and my parts start to crap out, I will definitely change my tune, but for now I'm completely satisfied. :D

What do you mean by rust on the rotor?  :D

The contact area of all 4 rotors got grooved, rusted, and pitted. They were replaced once under warranty because it was so bad it sounded like the wear sensors were hitting, and the second time was when I replaced them this year. When I pulled them off and tapped them with a hammer, they flaked apart like a rusty croissant. The pads, well the front pads were only about 20% worn, rears were shot (there's a tsb). My theory is that the pads were too harsh of a compound for the cheap, inferior metal of the rotors that GM uses. Hard pad, soft rotor, something's gotta give. Next time I need to do brakes, hopefully I won't need to replace rotors, and my $750 will be money well spent.
