Tranny filter kit

How does one know it they have the shallow or deep tranny pan? It seems like I heard that if you have the drain plug on your pan (which I do) then you use the deep pan filter kit.

 

Is this true? Are there measurements for the two pans?

This is speculation but I am guessing that the trucks with the trans cooler have the deep pan. I bought the deep pan kit and had my trans fluid changed at the dealer today while I had the tailgate cables changed. Only way to truly check would be to have the dealer check vs your vin number.

the deep pan has the step in it... it is about 3" deep at the deepest point. on the other hand, the shallow pan is only about 2" deep. my 2000 yukon 2wd (no transmission cooler I don't think) has the deep pan.

 

if you need a shallow pan filter kit, I have one that I'd be willing to unload. bought it online by mistake before I realized I have the deep pan. let me know.

My truck has the deep pan, and I just crawled under it and checked it, and dukbludvl is correct. It has a step to it and is 3" at it's deepest point.

 

I know it's the deep pan because I ran in to the same delemma as MountaineerTom. I went to the parts dept at the dealership to get the filter kit and the counterguy asked me if I had the deep or shallow pan. I gave him my vin and he said he couldn't tell from that, so he sold me both and I took them home and matched em up, then returned the wrong one.

I'll be dammed, I never even noticed the step in the pan before. I reckon that's what I have. I found an old work order from some warranty work I had done, and during the eork they changed out the filter and fluid. The P/N on the ticket matched what Gmpartsdirect lists as the Deep Pan in their online catalog.
