Can someone who has done this mod give a step by step list that maybe we can "post" at the top of this forum? The other topic is so long with conflicting info...maybe after a years worth of info can be rolled into a guide?

Any helpers willing to do this? :fume:

4X4TX, I hav a nav unit in my 03 Avalanche, working since January.

I presume you are speaking of the OEM navigation (UM8) head unit.

I had began my post as soon as I programmed it up on:CAFCNA:2nd Cad Nav in the Av

I wished it was simple to format and post instructions, however, there so many variants.

There are different versions of Nav units, Class II, NON-Luxury, INR and TNR.

The easy way is to just get a TNR (Touchscreen), install the GPS antenna (under your dash top) and connect the VSS wire from the instrument cluster over to your Head Unit. The wire is easy, placing the GPS antenna the factory way is a bit of a hassle).

Since the TNR has two types of interfaces, you need the NON-Luxury one, unless you have a luxury vehicle. (Denali, Escalade and 03 through early 04 H2) A Y91 option depicts if the vehicle has the Luxury Class II amplifier.

You can make it a bit easier if you just contact J P Customs

Well I am doing the hard way...the 04 version of the UM8 and having to replace the bose amp with the luxury one.....I am somewhat confused to what I have to do to the amp and how to get the vss hooked up....

I can get the old radio out and hook the new one up no problem...

I opened up my console and it seems getting to the bose amp will be a hassle as well...i only took out the top section which enabled me to see the amp but there was a big metal plate covering most of it and some more plastic..i guess this all has to come out?

Is mounting the GPS antenna that difficult?

In short, I think I will have to do exactly what you did in my 04 silverado w/bose

thanks in advance

Remember, the new TNR's are available that will work with your NON-Luxury amp. Nearly plug-n-Play. (JP Customs)

You will have to rewire the amp's connectors if you change it to a Y91 (Class II) type. Then the TNR needs to be one for that amp type.

The Tech2, connected to an Escalade or Denali will read off the P/N. It's PRESUMED they still have the "Y91". The way GM has been removing things lately.... :fume:

The GPS antenna factory mount needs to be accessed by removing the dash top. You can however, place it in behind the radio. The only limiting things are a secure mount and not be placed near (within reason) or under the metal framwork.

To do the amp swap, it's best to get the console out of the way. The amps mount on top of a frame.

If you want the Luxury amp change, I highly recommend you wait for a few days to a month as TNR types and amp compatability (Luxury) is being worked out. Otherwise, if you are satisified with your current amp, just order it for your truck, as they provide it.

Earlier (joystick) Nav radios and Lux amps are available to install with instructions, now.

I have a joystick navigation unit coming that I bought off ebay...model 15204335

So I will need the luxury amp which I will get off of ebay...

so as you said, I am looking for earlier nav unit and amp install instructions with hopefully pictures...

TNR = ?

thanks

TNR: Touch screen Navigation.

If the INR(: Integrated Navigation Radio) came from a Denali or Escalade, yes, you will need the amp. Usually a 15199992, unless you already have it.

You'll love the better sound.

If I can find your e-mail clicky icon, I'll mail you a word DOC that shows the wiring X-ref.

hey Sperry, whats up. This is "Gable74" from the AV forum.

Like Sperry said, there are just to many variables involved in the swap to compile a "HOW-TO". This is your simplified step by step for going from UC6 to UM8.....

1. remove the old AMP and rewire the 2 AMP harnesses using the supplied wire diagram in the other thread.

2. Run 2 extra wires of the same guage, one will be from the instrument cluster to the HU 8 pin harness, this will be your VSS wire (vehicle speed sensor). The other will be your ClassII wire and it will run from your 24 pin HU harness to the 24 pin AMP harness. The locations and details about this are also in the other thread.

3. Mount your antenna, i mounted it to the metal frame inside the dash behind, and to the left of the radio, i dint take the dash top off. I get a great signal where its at.

4. swap out the HU.

5. (optional) mount and hook up your ambient noise microphone.

The easiest way to get the amp out and the new on in is just remove the console compartment (seven screws), no need to remove the lid, the whole assembly pops out. Then 4 screws will remove the back of the console (where the A/C ducts and optional RSA are located). Once that is off, you can see the AMP, simply remove the screws that hold it down with a small 1/4' ratchet or wrench. Then you will need to bend the right brace down about 2" and the AMP will slide right out.

Ok good advice.

1 more question, what about the "amp" pins that need to be moved around?

Hey Jimmie! I was wondering how everything worked out... Drop by over there and say hi!

4X4TX, Sent it...

The connector unclips, and there's a small removal tool to help. If you want, ask a parts guy for the terminals that fit the GM 24 as well as the tool. You won't really need to replace the terminals, just swap them around.

You have some good experience here already, Jimmie's been through it painfully enough. With his help, you won't have to fear an unknown!

It all depends on when you want it, and how much i pay for it at the time. I get different shipments in at different prices. They usually fluxuate between $60 and $100, i figured i would give you worse case sinario. Just let me know if and when you want it, and i will let you know how much.
