Mobil 1 vs. Amsoil

I have used both Mobil 1 and Amsoil in my truck. They both are quality synthetics. I ran Mobil 5W-30 in my truck from 6000 miles to around 50,000 miles or so. Then I can across Amsoil and did some research and found it to be a better product in my opinion. There is a lot of comparison data to be found on the net if you are interested in researching it.

The advertise right on their website and product extended drain intervals up to 25,000 miles. This was the major factor in my switch from Mobil 1 to Amsoil. I put a lot of miles on my during the course of a year so having the extended drain intervals helps out a bunch. You can run Amsoil with one of their Superduty filters or with OEM quality filters. They just recommend changing any OEM filter per manufactures specifications.

I am by no means saying that Mobil 1 is not a good product and you can't go wrong with any quality synthetic as far as I am concerned. I just choose to make the switch to Amsoil. I also run Amsoil in my differentials, Trans, and transfer case...

Please respond with details on why you prefer Mobil 1 or Amsoil!

Thank You!

Mobil 1. Only because this discussion is repeated about every four months.

I was a Mobil 1 fan until it came time to put synthetic in my tranny. After doing much research I decided to go with Amsoil. Since then I have also put Amsoil in my wife's Bonny and I can tell you that I am very happy with the perfomance so far. While towing my 5th wheel tranny temps are down and I have noticed smoother shifting and even a slight MPG increase. We have a member here that I purchase all my Amsoil products from. His goes by Black02Silverado and his name is Nick. He is an authorized Amsoil distriibutor and will help with any info you need and ships really quick.

Since Ferrari, Jag, Lambo, Mercedes and the Vette run Mobil 1 - so do I. Must be some reason why they use it... Besides, even if Amsoil can go 25K between an oil change; who the hell would really feel comfortable doing it? My beverage of choice is Mobil 1 every 5-6K

Amsoil for me.

I ran Mobil 1 and I won't knock the oil because it is a good product. What i found though was that my vehicles ran much smoother with the Amsoil than Mobil 1 and we have not had a lubrication induced engine problem running this stuff in the 8 years we've been using it.

Admittedly I don't run Amsoil's extended drain intervals because I don't put that many miles on my truck. My wife's truck usually runs the same oiul for about 10k with filter changes every 3500 miles and the difference added in. She has just under 70k on her Duramax and no troubles.

You won't go wrong with either oil as both are of high quality. You'll receive several opinions and even other suggestions so just do some checking and use what you are comfortable with.

ok so if i'm reading this right you only change the filter, i keep looking at the prices on the stuff, think how do people aford this stuff.

No you don't only change the filter every time, you do need to drain the oil which is what I do to my vehicles at about every 10-12 k miles.

I don't go the 25 k as my own principle because I don't feel comfortable in doing so. It can probably do it but I just don't feel that type of system is for me. I do get the use and my money's worth using the system that I go by but I won't go on a seriously extended interval.

That is a good article and their are all kinds of other out there to read as well. Amsoil makes a good product as does Mobil 1, again you can't go wrong with either. Cost is close to the same for both products as well. Synthetics do cost more without a doubt though!

I think that what it all comes down to, as always is personal preference. I was running Amsoil Superduty filters, but went back to Delco filters because the engine runs more quietly than with the Amsoil filters IMO. I change the filter every 6,000 miles or so. That is normally when I get the Change Engine Oil message from the Oil Life Monitoring Sytem. This lets me add some fresh oil to the engine regularly as well. I run 10W-30 year round and loose around 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart of oil during the course of 6,000 mile filter change intervals. My truck has over 80,000 miles on it now and will be over 100,000 miles within the next year. I will continue to run Amsoil and if the engine goes for 200,000 miles plus, great! I hope closer to 300,000 miles...

I read his e-book too, and he knows his stuff and has compared every little aspect of everything. I'm not running Amsoil right now, but I'll be going with a full tranny flush and complete oil change in my truck and the wife's 04 Tahoe very soon. My buddy is a preferred customer ($20 for 6 months I think) and gets about 25% off retail prices. I figured it out and I can do their 0W-30 Series 2000 oil with filter changes at 12,500 miles, and an oil change at 35,000 or a year, for the same price as 6 conventional oil changes. So, it's the same cost, and your saving a ton of work. On the website above, he has been going for 68k miles and oil analysis show that his oil is still completely fine. Amazing.

Not knocking Mobil-1, but he has a section with specific tests that were ran and it shows that Amsoil clearly outperforms it. Maybe it's overkill, but I just liked those facts.

And as to why some manufactures run Mobil-1 and not Amsoil, simple. They don't want their cars to last to long that way they sell more! :D:mad:

Edit - I forgot to mention the improved gas mileage. Thats why I'm going with the 0w30. Might be slightly noisier at startup, but claim of a gained 4mpg are common with this oil.

There may be some truth to that, but by running either one of these great oils will probably allow your engine to run beyond the designed lifespan of other moving parts within.

The other reason I like Mobil 1...it's super easy to obtain.
