Squeaking Noise

Recommended Posts

This past week I heard a sound (more than a squeak, but less than a grind) coming from the rear of the truck. It is definitely something rotating/spinning just by the sound of it. I only hear it when I am coasting. Any thoughts/suggestions??

The scraping sound got worse a couple of weeks ago, so I immediately took it to the dealership. Their original diagnosis was material trapped inside the emergency brake drum. The service manager took me out and showed me the pile of dirt, rust, etc. that they had removed and said I was good to go.

I think I made it five miles before I heard the noise again. (I could feel it immediately, but could not hear it until I got up to cruising speed). So, I dropped the truck off again and left a note for the service manager to call when they had another look at it. The call came the following day and I was told that they were going to tear the rear-end apart since the noise seemed to be coming from there.

The next afternoon I get another call from the service manager to tell me that the noise was coming from the front universal joint. He said that the problem presented itself when they attempted to remove the drive shaft.

The truck has just over 68K miles on it, but my extended warranty picked up the tab. (>$300) I have driven it for about a week now and everything sounds/feels normal. :banghead:
